How can children learn to use the media and explore the new digital world step by step? We reveal what is important when it comes to media education in the family.

Digital media are fascinating for most children and play a role for many of you from early childhood. At the same time, the issue of media education in the family repeatedly raises questions and many parents are unsure how to make their children familiar with the use of media.
At what age is your own tablet okay? How long is a 10 year old allowed to surf the internet? And how do I prevent my child from bumping into pages that could unsettle them? Questions over questions that are unfortunately not so easy to answer.
Media education: General rules fall short
The fact is: Every child has individual requirements and thus a very own starting point, for example, is more or less susceptible to one "excessive" Media consumption or can deal differently with dangers lurking on the Internet.

Tip 1: Explain important terms and content
In order to create a first basis, it makes sense if you can explain the most important terms of the Internet to your child: What does it mean to be online? What are chats and how do I use search engines? You should also, if necessary a little later Explain topics like data protection or secure websites or stay in the conversation about changes. The more you can explain to your child at the beginning, the better it learns to use media and can use the net safely. A good side effect: It discovers you as an important contact for all questions about the Internet and digital media.
Tip 2: Avoid excessive media consumption
Primary school pupils still have to learn how to use the media sensibly. First, everything streams in unfiltered multimedia. That is why important point in media education in the family, to make sure that children are not overwhelmed by the media.
The older students get, the more they can be involved in decisions. This is how they learn to take responsibility for their own actions.
