Migrant mum – supports crowdfunding!

Migrant Mama – Supports crowdfunding!

A topic that has been close to my heart for years and that I read too little about in our blogger bubble: being a mum with a migration background in Germany. When I was still living in Berlin, the project Migrant Mama by Melisa Manrique and Manik Chander appeared again and again in my feed. Last year then the news: there will be a book! Now they are nominated for the German Integration Award and carry out a crowdfunding campaign, which you should absolutely support, because the next 100 migrant mums are searched for! A second book is being produced and you could be a part of it.

We would like to introduce you to the women behind Migrant Mama. And quite, very important, the link to crowdfunding: www.migrantmama.com/startnext

Hauptstadtmutti: Imagine yourself and your project.

We are Melisa and Manik, two good friends and good business partners for about a year.

Melisa: I live in Berlin since 2014 and am originally from Peru and Italy. I migrated with my family from Lima to Rome at the age of five and today I work as a community manager in Berlin and in August become a migrant mom myself.

Manik: I am a daughter of Indian parents and grew up in the Taunus. Today I work as a project manager in Frankfurt and have already initiated several integration projects in my university.

Hauptstadtmutti: When and how did it all start with the migrant mum?

We met each other over 4 years ago during a semester abroad in Mumbai and immediately talked about sports, curries and our migrant moms. We started this game “my mum mum is cooler than yours because …” and shared experiences such as “because she worked so hard to give me an education” or “she was so creative learning a new language” or “she was more persistent than anyone to get what she wanted”.

We understood that we admired our mothers because they made the challenges of migration a possibility and not a problem.

The idea of celebrating migrant moms has remained with us for several years until it became reality in October 2017. I, Melisa, decided to quit my job in the startup scene in Berlin to start a new adventure: a social enterprise. Since the topics of migration and female empowerment have always been my passion, and Manik has always been in my heart and soul, I had to call them and ask, “Manik, shall we? Let’s do it! It is time for Migrant Mama to become real. “And she said immediately, with joy:” Ok, I’m coming to Berlin! “. Since then we have initiated a movement called “Migrant Mama”, released a book called “Mama Superstar” – sold out in 4 weeks – and are starting a crowdfunding campaign for our second book “Mama Superstar”: Community Edition “.

Hauptstadtmutti: What happens now?

The movement “Migrant Mama” was nominated for the German Integration Award. We were very much looking forward to this opportunity to meet other wonderful projects from all over Germany that work for better communities. So we immediately started with the next steps: build the crowdfunding campaign and start it on May 7th and rock it until June 5th.

Hauptstadtmutti: What is crowdfunding for??

After our first book, we received unbelievable feedback from the readers. They sent us emails full of love, encouragement and gratitude because they brought the beauty of migration stories and the courage of migrant moms to the world. That’s why we decided to work on a second book together with our community!

Hauptstadtmutti: What is the book about and who should read it??

In contrast to the current rather problem-oriented debate, “Mama Superstar” celebrates migration and its protagonists. Each mom is a showcase example of courage, creativity, determination and unconditional love.

This was already demonstrated in the first book. Now everyone should have their say. With 100 stories about the everyday life of migrant moms the book should be even more colorful.

That’s why the book is for everyone who sees enrichment in cultural diversity and opportunities in migration.

It is pedagogues, language teachers and employees in the field of migration and integration. Of course, also for children over the age of 10. For those who want to get to know Germany from a new perspective.

The book ‘Mama Superstar’ is sold out, but we are giving away three copies! Just comment on Instagram and tell us who your favorite migrant mom is! It is beautifully illustrated and I keep it on the basis of the recipes in the kitchen, and I am regularly addressed.

PS: Advertorial is about the interview, because we are promoting something here and giving away books, not because we were paid for it.
