Here we have put together information for shore excursions in Molde on your own. In contrast to its wild southern neighbors, the broad and widely branched Moldefjord carries almost lovely features. The climate is very mild thanks to the Gulf Stream. The friendly city on the north bank of the Moldefjord quite rightly calls its surname “Rosenstadt”. Nowhere on this northern latitude do you find such an abundance of flowers in parks and gardens. Molde has nearly 27,000 inhabitants was affected during the last war very badly. Its urban structure is therefore modern. From the old days remained only the mansion Moldegard preserved, a white wooden house in Rococo style. The city became known nationally through the international jazz festival at the end of July and through the local football club Molde FK, which appears again and again in the Europa League. The modern Aker Stadium is right next to Storkaia Pier. Molde and Andalsnes are frequently visited on a Norway cruise in one day. Transport in Molde on your own

As you can see on the map, Molde has two possible berths for cruise ships called Storkaia and Moldegård. Many cruise ships stay in this harbor only half a day.

Most cruise ships use the mooring Storkaia to the right of the modern stadium. This is maybe 300 meters from the city center. Good for shore excursions in Molde on your own. The church tower is a good signpost. Around the church are the commercial streets of the center. The tourist office has an office at Torget No. 4.

The pier Moldegård is a bit out of the way and is rarely used by cruise ships. As a rule, there is a shuttle bus to the center.

Molde is not a tourist city. Correspondingly poor are the available means of transport. The company Molde Taxi (moldetaxi.no) operates a few taxis and also offers excursions. The ride on the mountain Varden should cost 230 NOK. We booked a taxi for the trip in July 2018. Nobody has appeared. Presumably, there were more interesting orders.

The local bus company for the whole region is the company Fram. In addition to the normal bus lines, there are also interesting bus excursions from / to Molde Bus Terminal under the menu item “Travel like the locals”. For example, a trip on the famous Atlantic Road.

Highlights for shore excursions in Molde

In Molde you can go for a nice walk. In the center there is a shopping street and also a beautiful promenade on the water. Popular are hikes, especially on the mountain Varden. Maps and tips are the tourist information. Other popular destinations for shore excursions in Molde are the Atlantic Road, the Romsdalsmuseum or the island of Håholmen.

Molde is just over 50 kilometers from Andalsnes. Many Landausflugsziele such as the Trollstigen panoramic road, the mighty Trollwand or a ride on the Raumabahn, are also possible from Molde.

Molde

Molde is a friendly little town of 27,000 inhabitants. Here you can easily walk. There is a lot of green and in summer a well-known jazz festival. As I said, Molde suffered a lot during World War II and therefore looks very new. Worth seeing is new cathedral from 1957. You can see the church on the freestanding bell tower. There is not much to see.

Local mountain Varden

Very impressive is the view from the 407 meter high mountain Varden on the city, the fjord and on the 87, partly snow-capped peaks of Romsdal. Of course you can also take a nice picture of the cruise ship in the harbor.

If you want, you can take a taxi (10 minutes) and then walk back the way. If you are good on foot, but can also run both routes. The walk from the city center is a good 4 kilometers long takes about one to one and a half hours. First you walk towards Romsdalsmuseum. Then the way to the local mountain is signposted. There is a restaurant on the Varden.

Romsdal

A nice destination for shore excursions in Molde on your own is the Romsdalsmuseum. The open air facility with about 40 fully furnished buildings from past centuries, is located about 10 minutes walk from the center. There are plants of this kind in every major city.

Atlantic road

Rides on the famous Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsveien), which connects Molde with Kristianssund via countless bridges, dams and islands, are also very popular. The track was originally planned as a railway line and was completed in the late 1980s. The Atlantic Road was awarded in Norway as a building of the century.

Håholmen Island

The island of Håholmen can be reached by boat from the Atlantic Road. A visit to the restored small fishing village is like a journey back in time. A project of the Norwegian circumnavigator Ragnar Thorseth. In addition to coffee and cake, there is information about Viking ships.
