Namibia

Tuesday 10.04.07 – Namibia
After breakfast we go on a canoe trip on the Orange River. We paddle for three hours by canoe to our camp. We can observe a few storks and enjoy the beautiful view, while still stretching your feet in the water and let your mind wander. At noon we continue to the Fish River Canyon. There is a short walk before I enjoy the sunset with a good red wine. Dinner is also available right at the canyon, where after the sun goes down the stars are looked at, which are just fantastic.

In the morning wait for the warming sun and the natural spectacle

At a quarter past four, we get up and at 5.00 h we go to dune 45 to experience the sunrise. The ascent to the dune is quite difficult and arrived at the top we wait for the showdown! It’s so cold that most of us freeze (so take something hot!), Especially the wind. Suddenly the sun is there and it only takes seconds until the sun is completely visible. At 7.00 h everyone is back at the truck, where breakfast is waiting for us. From there we continue to Sossus Vlei, where a bushman is waiting for us. During the guided tour to Dead Sossus Vlei the bushman explains a lot about the flora and fauna. The colors, contrasts and the dunes are unique. I can only say, you have to see that. After about 1.5 hours it goes back towards the truck and then to the camp. At 41 degrees in the shade, I lie down for another two hours to relax. Then the tents are broken off and we drive to the next camp. After we reach the camp in Solitaire, we relax a bit and play something with the rugby egg. In addition to the red wine is tested and eventually the evening then comes to an end.

Friday 13.4.07
From Solitaire it goes to Walvis Bay, the journey takes about 4 hours. There we take a quick look at the flamingos on the beach and continue to Swakopmund. On the way to Swakopmund we pass the lunar landscape in Namibia, which somehow has something. In Swakopmund we will spend two nights in a backpacker. The next day, extra activities such as Quadbiking, skydiving or a Senicflight can be booked. I decide for the flight over the dunes. In the afternoon, the city is first inquired, bought something and the ice-cold water inspected by the sea. In the evening we all go out to eat together and I order lobster, which was great. Then we go to a pub until just after midnight.

Saturday 14.4.07
After a coffee and a visit to the internet cafe (1 email = 20 min.) I will be picked up for a scenic flight at 14.00 h. The small machine is manned by five people and the pilot. The flight lasts about 2.15 hours and leads over Sptzkopje, Moon Landscape Kuiseb Canyon, Sossus Vlei via Walvis Bay back to Swakopmund. The flight and the view from the top was just amazing, just great.

Sunday 15.4.07
The trip continues to Spitzkopje, where the camp is pitched open, so no tent. There are only two outhouse and nothing else – pure nature. A guide shows us the area and the rock paintings, which are about 2000 to 4000 years old. The starry sky is just fantastic and is considered to fall asleep.

Monday 16.4.07
Today we go to the Himbaland. Near the camp there is a lodge built in the rocks for the French movie “La Pista”. The visit to the Himbas is postponed to the next morning, as it started raining like a bucket. Not all tents were left after the storm and the rain, but thankfully there was still mine. The evening ended at the campfire and luckily it did not rain any more.

Tuesday 17.4.07
After breakfast we go to the Himbadorf. It is frightening what these people do for tourists. After 5 min. it is enough for me and Sabine and we go back to the camp. There we clear up the camp with our guide Wessel and drive to the Etosha National Park, where we spend the night in the camp Okankulju. The camp has a floodlit waterhole where we see a rhino with a child in the evening. At night I wake up and go to the waterhole again at 3.00 h and lo and behold, four lions are also passing by!

Wednesday 18.4.07
After it started to rain at 4.00 h, the camp was already dismantled at 5.00 h and the ride went through the park. During the trip I could see the following animals: lions, zebras, rhino, impalas, gemsboks, springboks and many other things, of which I no longer know the names. Overnight stay in another camp of the park.

Thursday 19.4.07
It gets up again very early, but we are rewarded with rain for it! For this reason, the camp was also broken down quickly. Now there was a game drive to the gate of the Etosha and then it went to Rundu. In Rundu is then shopped again before it went to the camp on the Kavongo River. Since the road was under water and is still being repaired, we go by boat to the camp and the truck should follow. Well, the truck tried it and got stuck in front of the repaired spot! Let’s see how long it will take tomorrow until the truck is out again.
