CNG, LNG, LPG, natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas – what is what and what are the differences?? Depending on the area of application, drivers can save a lot of money.

  • gas cars often worthwhile only from a mileage of 60.000 kilometers per year.
  • Gas burns environmentally friendly than gasoline or diesel.
  • Around 550.000 cars in germany drive with gas drive.

cars, trucks and ships run on diesel or gasoline. Both fuels are considered pollutants. An alternative is the use of gas than fuel. Depending on the application, however, a different gas advantageous.

CNG stands for compressed natural gas, means nothing other than compressed natural gas. CNG consists mainly of methane. LPG stands for liquid petroleum gas, is a byproduct of petroleum processing. It is also called autogas and is a liquid gas. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is also methane, but it is liquefied by cooling it to temperatures between minus 161 and minus 164 degrees celsius. LNG plays out its advantages in large equipment, for example cruise ships. In lower saxony there are 965 autogas-gas stations.

tax rates autogas 1000 kg 1 liter
1.1.2020 to 31.12.2020 271.79 euro 14,68 cent
1.1.2021 to 31.12.2021 317.53 euro 17.15 cents
1.1.2022 to 31.12.2022 363.94 euro 19.65 cents
from 1.1.2023 409.00 euro 22.09 cent

Up to 60 cents per liter cheaper to fill up – who wouldn’t want that?? Compared to gasoline, the fuel prices for gas cars actually significantly lower, because autogas (LPG) until the end of 2022 and natural gas (CNG) tax benefits until 2026. However, the purchase price is considerably higher, reports the trade journal "auto motor sport" (issue 11/20).

Car with gas drive is not always worthwhile

However, depending on the model, a mileage of more than 60 kilometers could be required before the price premium pays for itself.000 kilometers will be necessary. That’s why experts advise not necessarily to go for a brand-new model, but to look for a used one gas car keep an eye out for the price surcharge for the gas drive is no longer so high.

At gas cars differentiates between factory-fitted gas plants and retrofit solutions. Especially rebuilt cars should be taken more closely under the magnifying glass. The higher exhaust gas temperatures in gas mode rarely have a negative effect on the exhaust valves. The most common problems were related to the setting of the gas system together and could be fixed by software update.

All work on auto-gas system should only be carried out by certified specialist companies. Before buying a used vehicle, it is therefore important to obtain assurances that the conversion and maintenance work has been carried out by a specialist company, say the experts. A question that becomes superfluous when the car already ex works for the gas operation was designed. This is the case with CNG ümainly the case, because a retrofit would be too expensive. A LPG-conversion costs around 2500 euros.

Gas cars are flexible and emit less CO2

Besides the costs, the main arguments are environmental aspects and flexibility for gas cars: gas burns according to the data environmentally friendly than gasoline or diesel and also produces up to 25 percent less CO2 than, for example, a gasoline engine. nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions are also lower. And if the gas tank empty or none gas if there is no gas available at the filling station, you simply continue on gasoline. Only one switch has to be flipped.

A more or less bearable disadvantage there is with gas cars but mostly still: the loading volume of the luggage compartment shrinks a little, because the luggage compartment floor is not as large as it should be because of the gas tanks must be a little higher than usual for the respective model.

Around 550.000 cars in germany drive with gas drive. By far the greater part of them, about 450.000, is used with autogas, (LPG) known, operated. What the output as far as carbon dioxide and soot particles are concerned, both types of fuel (LPG and CNG) more environmentally friendly than a conventional gasoline engine.

Cars with gas drive not profitable for everyone. „Who only drives on autobahns with lead foot is on the road, the gas drive hardly. Consumption increases exponentially at high speeds, unlike gasoline", says michael kruttschnitt from TuV South. Even if you only drive a few thousand kilometers a year, you would be better off with a conventional gasoline engine.
