Neuharlingersiel in autumn

North Sea adventure does not always mean off to an island. There is also much to discover on the mainland, for example in Neuharlingersiel. And that in every season.

1. sights & Activities in Neuharlingersiel

The sky turns pink. The sea has once again gathered on the other side of the earth and produced low tide in Neuharlingersiel. Now begins the most beautiful time, because now the Watt shows what it can do.

Blue hour on the beach

Do you know, for example, the crackling of the watt? It’s something I always totally disconnect, just listen to and be amazed. These sounds in the mud are really holiday for the ears. They are so quiet, they creep cautiously into their perception. Just go to the beach and listen. Then you hear the watts breathe. The shells and worms in the seabed suck in air, separating sand into small clumps – all with a sound that tingles like the pearls in champagne glass.

The Watt can do more than just gray

1.1. Wattwanderung

If that’s not enough for you, head to a mudflat walk. Best, by the way, with well-fitting and not too valuable sneakers. By the way, which shoes should be worn during the mudflat hike is one of the most frequent questions before the mudflat hike. Of course you can walk barefoot, but then run the risk of tearing your feet on sharp shells. In any case, the mudflat hiking is one of them, if you want to understand the North Sea once properly. Only then will the supposedly gray mud be recognized as a miracle of life.

1.2. Sandy beach in Neuharlingersiel

Has Neuharlingersiel beach, is the next question that is often asked, if one deals with the place in Wangerland. Yes, there is a sandy beach. But like almost everywhere on the North Sea coast on the East Frisian peninsula, it is artificially piled up. Unfortunately, the coast of the mainland in this point bad luck, because the beautiful sandy beach got the offshore, East Frisian Islands. In this case Spiekeroog, which is in sight of Neuharlingersiel.

The sheep guarantee is high on the dike

1.3. To go biking & Sports

Who wants to get to know East Frisia and its coast, swings on the bike. This also applies to Neuharlingersiel, which is actually located in Wangerland. There are many nice bike rides there, but one of the nicest remains for me the route to Carolinensiel. It is about 10 kilometers long and leads directly along the dike.

On the bike tour, it may happen that sheep suddenly block the way

You drive directly between flocks of sheep. But best of all is a stop at the bird watching house on about half of the way. Through the binoculars on site you can watch geese, gulls and lapwings. Another nice cycling tour is a guided tour of the potato and cow that stops at farms and informs about keeping cows and farming. In any case, cycling is part of the journey to Neuharlingersiel. By bike you discover the landscape in a different way and see a lot more things.

If the weather is not so beautiful, then the local swimming and spa pool bathing resort lures to a long visit. And the very active can try their hand at paddling, as my blogger colleague Ellen has tried. I’d rather learn to surf, that too, like SUP in Neuharlingersiel. The windsurfing school Windloop also offers courses in kitesurfing on the North Sea. www.windloop.de

It rocks and creaks in the harbor.

1.4. Hafenidylle

Cutter swings in the water and some invite to excursions, such as the seal banks. The port of Neuharlingersiel is for me an exceptional place, where the typical flair of the North Sea blows. With shrimp cutters, wooden boats and a ferry dock. The trawler Gorch Fock, for example, takes his visitors on excursions to the North Sea or to the island of Spiekeroog. Around 36 € should be scheduled for this. The harbor of Neuharlingersiel is especially beautiful in the morning, when the sun is shining on the first houses and hardly anyone is on the way. Except perhaps the first guests who take the ferry from the investor Neuharlingersiel Spiekeroog.

In the port of Neuharlingersiel are still real shrimp cutters.

1.5. Ferry to Spiekeroog

From Neuharlingersiel the ferry goes to Spiekeroog. Who hopes for a clear roadmap, will be disappointed, because the travel times of the ferry to Spiekeroog are tide-dependent. So they change every day. Here is the timetable for the ferry to Spiekeroog. With parking space search, ticket purchase and the way to the ferry dock you should plan at least 30 minutes time, with parking space search rather more.

1.6. Attractions

The Sielhaus opposite the harbor with the upstream pumping station and the Buddelschiffmuseum in the village are among the most popular attractions in Neuharlingersiel.

1.7. sunset & Meeresleuchten

Neuharlingersiel is an ideal place for sunset cinema. The dike is like an arena and gives a view of the mudflats. It is the highlight of the day at any time of the year, sitting there and watching as the sun sets. Incidentally, in the summer there are quite extraordinary tours: With a little luck you can watch the sea lights there.

4. Eating out in Neuharlingersiel

4.1. restaurants

There are many restaurants in Neuharlingersiel. One of the most popular is the tearoom by the sea dike, which serves many fish dishes. Especially noble is the Sielhof, an old farmhouse with a beautiful park. You can also sit there nice to drink coffee – in summer in the garden. It is a bit more noble in the restaurant La Mer, which, as usual, has also specialized in fish.

4.2. cafes

Right at the harbor there is an ice cream café: Schleckeria. The balls are really expensive at 1.80 €, but it’s also worth it, the ice cream is great and there are even vegan varieties that taste like milk ice cream. Visitors can also sit in the Café Störmhuus overlooking the harbor and waffles on the plate. The Café Inselblick is also beautifully modern and centrally located at the harbor.

Pretty ruffled by the wind.
