Definition of neuropsychology

Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology is a relatively young profession that deals with the relationship between the functions of the brain on the one hand and behavior and experience on the other; thus it is located between the departments of psychology and neurology. Behavior is interpreted relatively broadly. In addition to motor skills, this also includes so-called “higher cognitive performance” such as attention and concentration skills, learning and memory skills, language understanding and production, reading and writing, complex visual skills, reasoning and action planning as well as the personality of the person.

As a result of damaging influences, the functioning of the brain can either be temporarily or permanently disturbed. Permanent malfunctions occur primarily in neurological diseases such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumor, epilepsy, dementia, etc. The loss of performance can now be very specific and depends, among other things, on which areas of the brain are affected by the damage. However – especially in developmental neuropsychology – there are cognitive functional impairments or developmental disorders even without visible brain damage (language development disorder after birth-related lack of oxygen, hyperactivity and / or learning disorder in premature babies etc.).
