Obesity – obesity in children ›

An alarming study from Germany shows that more and more children suffer from age-related diabetes, which is due to their obesity. Normally, this type of diabetes only occurs, if at all, from the age of 50. Too little exercise, improper nutrition and modern consumer electronics are the factors that cause obesity. Some children between the ages of 10 and 13 bring 100 to 120 kilos on the Libra!

Prof. Dr. Kurt Widhalm, from the University Children’s Hospital Vienna, pointed out the importance of being overweight in childhood at the 11th European Congress for Obesity in the Vienna Hofburg. 73% obese children 20% are overweight- A third of the parents of obese children suffer from obesity themselves, 50% are at least overweight. Computer games, television and the consumption of junk food (burgers, candy bars, chips, etc.) are also exacerbating.

General practitioners and school doctors are also encouraged to do strong overweight not to be trivialized: childhood obesity is a disease and must therefore be recognized and treated as such. Later, obesity can develop into obesity and then changing the diet is very difficult or almost impossible. 40% of the children with obese symptoms in the seventh year of life show this as an adult. 7 out of 10 adolescents remain very overweight.

Diet without exercise is of no use

Weight reduction measures include calorie restriction, reduction of fat consumption, sporting activity and behavior changes, also in the sense of self-controlled eating behavior. A diet without exercise is not expedient. In addition, short-term weight reductions rarely have a lasting effect. Children must be supported and accompanied throughout the diet.

Take your child out into the fresh air and show them the advantage of nature over the digital world. This is not only good for the child, but also for you. Pay attention to a balanced diet. For example, if your child says “I don’t like that” to fish or peas, process them in the spaghetti sauce.

Do not force your child to eat the plate empty to get the dessert as a "reward". In contrast to adults, a child has a very well-developed sense of satiety and knows exactly when it has enough. Try to avoid / reduce snacks, because chips or the chocolate bar are the most common fats.

Treat your child to fruit tea and fruit juices with little or no sugar. Avoid cola and the like. A ¼ liter of cola contains about 7-10 pieces of sugar cubes. We also advise against “light” drinks, since this contains aspartame, which converts to fomaldehyde (formic acid) at body temperature.
This sweetener is also a permitted preservative and is unfortunately found in a lot a lot of Products (chewing gum, muesli, yoghurt), which are offered as "light" or "without sugar" again.

Medical support

The Vienna University Children’s Clinic offers a program for obese children and adolescents, the special feature of which is its multi-professionalism: Doctors, psychologists, dieticians, physiotherapists and nursing staff work as a team to help those affected on several levels.
