Our water filter: why, which and is it good?

After I showed you our new (plastic-free) water heater and mentioned the water filter here, but some questions came up, which I would like to clarify in this post. Many have been interested in the water filter. This is also a very important issue, after all, water is our staple food that we eat every day. The higher the quality of the water, the better for our body.

What advantages does a water filter offer??

Honestly, the topic is very comprehensive. I would like to summarize in bullet points, which advantages a water filter offers. The list can certainly be further completed:

  • very good water quality
  • Removes 99.9995% of all bacteria
  • Removes pesticides and fine particles from piping
  • Remove chlorine, odors & discoloration
  • Takes medicines and hormones
  • Reduces heavy metals, microplastics
  • Protects and preserves all valuable minerals
  • economical
  • environmentally friendly
  • no bottle towing
  • always available at home
  • easy installation
  • Occupied security through certificates
  • suitable for every household and every office

Tap water is healthy – that’s right?

I have already written about tap water in several posts and would like to repeat myself reluctantly, but I prefer to filter my tap water additionally. Yes, water is controlled quite well in Germany. The limit values are specified in the Drinking Water Ordinance and the waterworks must not exceed the limit values. This creates a very good foundation. Just because certain limits are set, it does not mean that the water from the faucet is of excellent quality and healthy for our body. Who can tell me for sure that the limits set are really harmless? The problem is that there are even more substances that unfortunately do not appear in the drinking water regulation, but occur in our drinking water.

Strong environmental pollution contaminates our drinking water

The fact is that our drinking water is increasingly suffering from pollution from the environment. There are a lot of fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture, the use of medicines is generous and the mere fact that more and more people live on this planet does not mean that our water is constantly improving. More and more you hear that this or that is found in the water. Unfortunately, microplastics in our drinking water is no longer a fairytale.

Tap water does not just come from the groundwater

Drinking water consists of various sources of water. The Federal Environment Agency describes drinking water as follows: "Drinking water is a natural product and 70 percent of it is made from groundwater and spring water. Up to 13 percent of lake, dam or river water is used directly. The remaining 17 percent are a mean thing: originally surface water, but through a ground passage or bank filtration almost like groundwater."

So it does not come from the faucet "depth" Groundwater, which by the way suffers from heavy land use such as agriculture more and more contaminants. There are also other sources that are even more heavily burdened according to my research. I suspect that the waterworks have a lot to do with today’s demands. Unfortunately, they are not equipped to remove different substances from the water beyond the specified limits.

What many do not even think about: The problem with the pipes. They can greatly affect the water quality. Who lives on rent, usually does not know at all, which lines are in the house. Heavy metals such as zinc and lead can contaminate the drinking water due to old water pipes or broken gaskets. Likewise, bacteria could accumulate, depending on how the whole pipe system is constructed. Only on the edge.

Activated carbon water filter in use

Now that I have written so much about various substances in the water, I would like to tell you what our water filter is filtering:

  • Removes 99.9995% of all bacteria
  • Removes chlorine
  • Removes pesticides, fungicides & herbicides
  • Remove medication residues
  • Removes odors & discoloration
  • Reduces heavy metals
  • Remove hormones
  • Reduces microplastic
  • Removes fine particles from piping
  • Protects and preserves all valuable minerals

The water filter is made in Germany and the core consists of a patented activated carbon block filter. Totally exciting is the performance in such a filter. The filter area of the Core Cartridge covers a size of over 20 football fields. As a result, the water flows through a distance of more than one kilometer during the filtering process. The activated carbon for the filter core is made from 100% baked coconut shells. Many independent reports, certificates and long-term studies ensure that the water filter is reliable. Again and again I am annoyed by the fact that water filters are often dubbed germ slings. That is not right! There are huge differences, you can not throw all the cars in a box, just because they have wheels. Our water filter can e.g. can not be compared with a table filter (directly in the pot), because it is constructed very differently. But I would like to write a detailed post, otherwise it will be too much. In most cases, such tests mean commercial table filters for little money, which could introduce additional bacteria into the drinking water.

Important: No added silver in the water filter

I like solutions that are as simple and effective as possible. There are water filters that also work with silver as a disinfectant to kill possible bacterial accumulation. However, then there are traces of silver in the water, which I personally like to avoid. I’m not sure, I do not want to drink silver contaminated with water. The problem with bacterial contamination can be prevented by proper handling of the water filter. Our water filter is already pretty safe in its construction, but those who follow these tips can feel safe:

  • Every 6 months or after 10,000 liters of water replace the cartridge
  • Drain standing water in the water filter (for example in the morning) (you also do this with tap water, because there was no movement in the tubes for a long time)
  • Bonus: The water filter has an integrated protection against microbial contamination through extremely fine filter pores
  • The water filter may only be operated with cold water!

Incidentally, the water filter manages to filter about 120 liters per hour. The housing and hose are free of plasticizers and all materials used are of course tested for food safety.

Which water filter we have and how long?

We have the water filter ONE with a Vitaliser Victoria. Our water filter is quite mobile, i. You can also take him on vacation. We just have it next to our sink in the kitchen and connected directly to the tap. This can easily be done in-house, just follow the steps on the instructions and in a few minutes you have already installed the water filter. We are not trained plumbers! The cartridge we have already exchanged once, we get it delivered every 6 months by subscription home. This has the advantage that I do not have to worry about it anymore because it comes automatically at the right time. To change the cartridge you just have to screw the water filter on and then insert it. There are also other water filter models, depending on what you want. The water filter does not have to be visible next to the sink. If you want a table-top filter, you can choose a suitable model. For us, this flexible and cost-effective variant is sufficient. The vitalizer is not a MUST, but makes the water a bit softer. Through his vortex chamber he is able to stir up and revive the water structure. I cook our tea always with the water from the filter and have almost no calcium deposits in the kettle. This could also be due to the vitalizer, as it provides a different water structure.

Update Dec. 2018: Meanwhile we use the water filter ONE +. It comes with practical accessories and the filter cartridge is significantly more powerful. In addition, there are new in the range of a stylish stainless steel water filter on which we have been waiting for a long time, because we want to use less and less plastic.

How do we like our water filter?

I would not go to all that trouble if we did not like the water filter. We use it daily and I love it. In the morning, I always fill up the cans and bottles that we drink throughout the day. The water bottles look so chic! By the way, the closures are great! You can not lose it and opening it is so enjoyable. Likewise, we tap the water directly from the water filter when we cook food. I also use the water for my flowers. Our dog likes to drink the water. Everyone who drank our water filter water thought it was good. We had no problems with the water filter until now. He just does his job and that’s exactly what I expect from him. From time to time I wipe the filter with a sponge – so you just have to worry about the cartridge change. But that does the subscription service automatically.

There is so much more to say about water and water filters. I will first collect your questions and discuss them in detail in another article. One thing I would like to get rid of: Since we have our water filter, I drink a lot more water. Because it is always available and you have a great feeling.

Hello Dieter,
Thanks for your feedback! I understand that my information may not be accurate enough. I did not want to write the article too technically, so that beginners can also understand what such a filter can do. Whether removes or removes. Read more We are there with a value of over 99%. I think that’s a decent performance.
You’re absolutely right, let’s try it this way: Our filter is an activated carbon cartridge made of baked coconut shells, which was produced in a patented sintering process. The pores are so fine by this thermal densification that they can even filter microplastics down to 0.45 microns. Hormones and drug residues are removed 99.9999%. This can be read on the website of The Local Water in various test certificates exactly. Look at the report entitled: Institute of Food Chemistry of the Technical University of Berlin (Hormone), there you will find more test results.
A membrane (in combination with other filter media) filters the water into pure H2O (similar to distilled water), which is the reverse osmosis technology developed by NASA, a technique used to desalinate seawater, for example Many of my fellow bloggers also swear by it, even if all the minerals are filtered out, while others reject this procedure – I’ve learned a lot about it before – at the moment I’m not familiar with reverse osmosis technology with reports, long-term studies and certificates In addition, it often works only with electricity, and sometimes it takes minutes to make one liter of water, and more than one liter of water produces 3 liters of wastewater (and more) .The initial cost is usually very high -Osmosis-plant: Here you should listen to his stomach s clutter and a veritable information war. What I personally dislike about these osmosis devices is the fact that so many plastic parts are installed in them and there are nowhere good test certificates. On the other hand, the filter cartridges from The Local Water as well as all housings have been tested and certified down to the last detail. And that from recognized and independent German test centers. The filters are made by hand in Germany in a small manufactory operation. The reverse osmosis plants that I know come from the Far East. And there are quite different standards for substances such as BPA than here in Germany. My recommendation would be, anyone who would like to grow a reverse osmosis plant, which should necessarily do so. However, please pay attention to the certifications and ask once exactly. Above all, as it is ordered with the acidity of the water.

If you have any questions, I look forward to hearing from you!
All the best!
Lisa.
