child car seat guide: important facts before buying

The division into different child seat groups according to weight

Since 2005 authoritative for the classification into the different standard groups is, according to the standard ECE R 44 the weight of the child. In addition, there is information about the age, which is not binding, because every child grows and develops at its own pace.

Based on these factors, child seats are divided into the most common groups:

Child seat group 0 and 0+ respectively: this group includes the classic baby car seats. They are suitable from the first day of life up to a weight of ten or 13 kilograms. Seats in this group must necessarily be secured in the stroller against the direction of travel.

Group I (child seat from 1 year of age): car seats in this classification are suitable for children weighing between 9 and 18 kilograms, which corresponds to an age of about four years. It is the first child seat after the baby car seat.

Group II: these seats are designed for children weighing approximately 15 to 25 kilograms (age: approximately three and a half to seven years).

Group III: these child car seats can be used until the offspring weighs 36 kilograms, i.e. around the age of twelve.

Into the groups II and III also the so called child booster seats or seat shells.

The new i-size standard (UN ECE R129) depends on the size of the child

To ensure that child seats in cars can guarantee the greatest possible safety, they are approved in accordance with valid standards. Since 2005, this standard ECE R 44/04.

Since 2013, the i-size standard has promised an updated and further improved standard. It is the first part of the new legal safety regulation ECE R129 and applies parallel to the ECE R 44 standard.

  • Since 2013: for infant carriers (previously 0, 0+) as well as group I isofix child seats, which have an integrated (integral) belt system.
  • Since 2017: for non-integral child seats the previous group II and III
  • Since 2019: for all other child car seats

Behind these innovations is the realization, that children up to the age of at least 15 months are most safely transported rear-facing in the car – in so called reboarder.

Accordingly, driving forward in i-size seats only permitted from 15 months of age. (the ADAC recommends driving forward only from 2 years, other experts even from 4 years).

The approval of the seats is oriented – unlike the previous standards – the to the body size of the children. The manufacturers can determine the size ranges of the respective seats themselves.

In addition, seats of the newer I-size standard must also have an passing the side impact test.

Child car seats for long term use

So-called long-term child seats are models that can be used across groups for different weight classes and body sizes. The manufacturers make this possible by means of various conversion variants, with the help of which the seats can be adapted to the development of the children.

For example, the headrest extend or the seat insert for the smallest later remove. During use in seating group I, these seats mostly have a sleeping position.

Belt systems versus impact shields

Not only in the infant carrier, also in car seats of the Group I and i-size seats for small children are usually equipped with a integrated five-point belt strapped in. In order to achieve the greatest possible safety, parents should ensure that the belts fit snugly against the child’s body when adjusting the seat.

Catching body - child car seat

Alternatively there are models with a so-called safety catch system. These are child car seats in which the children are held in front of the abdomen not by a belt, but by a wide catch – also called a safety cushion. This is intended to significantly reduce the impact of a collision.

What exactly is an isofix system?

The system isofix has been developed to correct fastening of the seat in the car to ensure and thus make the transport of children even safer. Because isofix creates a firm connection between the child car seat and the car.

The isofix restraints are latched into the restraints in the car. With conventional child seats, on the other hand, the seat is held in place exclusively by the three-point belt.

In the seat groups II and III the belt also secures the child in the seat. For baby car seats or group I seats are special isofix bases available. They are firmly anchored to the car, while the seats themselves are removable. additional safety is provided by the isofix base or alternatively a so-called top tether, a restraining belt at the top of the child car seat.

vehicles that do not have an isofix mount ex works, retrofitting is possible in some cases.

child car seat reboarder iSize

child car seat with rearward facing: the reboarder

The term reboarder refers to child car seats that are mounted in the car against the direction of travel. So the child rides facing backwards.

With the exception of infant carriers, the vast majority of children in this country are transported in the direction of travel. As soon as the child has outgrown the infant carrier, he or she rides forward in the child seat in the car.

However, experts have long since come to the conclusion that children up to four years of age should sit in reboarder seats. The reason: during this developmental phase, the neck muscles and the spine of children are not yet strong enough to properly support the head in the event of a collision.

As a result, transport in conventional and forward-facing child seats can lead to serious head or spinal injuries; a danger that experts believe could be significantly reduced by using reboarders.

Reboarders are available in the 0/I, I/II and 0+/I/II seat groups and are therefore suitable for children up to a weight of about 25 kilograms. (I-size seats are only suitable for rearward-facing children up to the age of 15 months and are designed for children up to 105 cm).)

In germany, reboarder seats for older children are not yet widespread. They are often considered heavy, cumbersome and difficult to install. However, experience from the scandinavian countries does not substantiate this concern. In this age group, the use of reboarders is almost a matter of course.

Tips for buying a child car seat

To find the right seat for their child, parents should create a small checklist in advance. The following factors must be taken into account:

child car seat guide - shopping tips

  • Is the seat for a certain developmental and growth phases of the child is it intended or should it last for a longer period of time if possible?
  • Should the car seat only be used in one or in several vehicles?? If the seat is used in more than one car, it is important that it is not too heavy and that it is as easy as possible to install and remove. In any case, one person should be able to do this alone.
  • Is the child’s own vehicle suitable for the child seat?? This question applies in particular to isofix child seats and models that comply with the new i-size standard. Who decides for a conventional seat without isofix, should in any case check the belt length. Otherwise, problems can sometimes arise, for example with the fixation of baby seats. An installation test is essential not only for this reason!
  • When selecting a model, parents can, for example be guided by detailed test reports.
  • No matter which child car seat it will ultimately be: it must comply with current standards. Parents can recognize these by the corresponding sticker on the child seat.
  • Last but not least keep an eye on the child’s growth, to switch to a seat in the next higher group in good time if necessary.

Overview: child car seats in test

child car seat test

Children’s car seat test 2021 (ADAC autumn 2021): seats that grow with the child fail the test

As was already the case in june of this year, we examined ADAC and foundation warentest in their autumn test 26 child car seats for different age groups on operation, ergonomics, safety and exposure to pollutants.

14 infant carriers and child seats received a "good" rating. The trend to the growing child seat poses safety risks, however.

Child car seats that grow with the child

More and more manufacturers are attempting to reduce the number of seats to one needs of all age groups (from birth to about 12 years) to cover. The current test has shown that this works more badly than well.

At first glance, parents save money if they can replace the usual three child seats with one. At second glance but the disadvantages outweigh the.

A seat that meets the needs of all age groups can be designed only with compromises in the development according to the testers. The testers criticize above all the negative effects on safety and handling of the seats.

They measured during the crash tests increased dummy loads. Complaints were also made about the different installation types of the respective seats, which become necessary with the prolonged use. This increases the risk of misuse. In addition, the high tare weight of the seats.

Among the criticized and seats rated only "sufficient belonged to the lettas murphy, nuna tres LX, chicco seat4fix and chicco seat4fix air.

4 models only "poor" because of harmful substances

Besides safety problems led again pollutant findings to devaluations. important to know: children can pollutants not only about the mouth, but also over the skin record.

In the child car seats osann oreo 360 and osann oreo 360 II the plasticizer DPHP found. DPHP can damage the pituitary and thyroid glands.

The child seat besafe izi go modular X1 i-size + izi modular i-size base contained very high amounts of naphthalene. Naphthalene belongs to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and is probably carcinogenic.

This applies to seats with the approval number 030059, which are tested from 23.11.2019 and up to 19.11.were produced in 2020. Chicco offers an exchange of the iosfix base. The seat itself scored "good" (2.3).

child car seats test (stiftung warentest& ADAC 10/2020)

child car seat test with child

Also in autumn 2020 stand of the compulsory child car seats test by stiftung warentest and ADAC to. This time a total of 14 models examined, including u.A, britax roman, joie, besafe and cybex.

All the seats tested were so-called i-size models. Means all seats are, according to the new standard R 129 "i-size, sorted and approved according to body size.

8 child seats are "good," 6 are "satisfactory"& not a total failure

The best result ("good" 1.6) drove the joie i-spin safe a. The seat is designed for babies and toddlers suitable up to a height of 105 cm. In the "classic" baby car seats also knew the cybex aton B (1.7) too convincing

Also for children from 4 to 12 years, there is a seat with the maxi-cosi morion a "good" (2,0) seat on offer.

buy test winner = 100 % safety? Unfortunately, it is not that simple.

The ADAC experts also explicitly point out in this test that installation errors in particular are the most common reason for serious injuries.

This is how when buckling up from baby seats often pelvic and diagonal belt interchanged. In the event of a head-on collision, the car seat may rotate out of the harness. Also, the belt is often not inserted into the intended guide.

integral child seats, so seats with integrated harness straps, offer flexible installation options. they can be adjusted in the direction of travel as well as backwards.

Biggest source of error here: the integrated belt is not tightened enough. children can loosen their arms and fly forward in an accident.

At non-integral child seats children and seats are strapped directly with the car seat belt. Here it is enormously important to lap belt to be inserted into the guide. Otherwise it runs over the sensitive abdominal area of the child, which in the event of an accident leads to serious internal injuries could lead.

Note from the ADAC on simple booster seats

booster seats without back support should be only as an emergency solution can be used for bigger children. The car belt and the child can not be positioned optimally to each other and lacks any impact protection.

Since 2017, new seat models may therefore also only be approved and used for children over 1.25 meters (approx. 7 years).

child car seats: different child seat groups tested (stiftung warentest&) ADAC 2020)

Child car seat test-2020

Stiftung warentest and the ADAC examined in the current child car seat test (july 2020) overall 25 child car seats from four different child seat groups.

17 seats scored overall "good" from. Noteworthy: with the exception of the hifold child seat, all the seats could in the pollutant test with "good and "very good" results convince.

With the silver cross dream i-size, one seat even achieved the rare overall result of "very good" and was thus the test winner.

The minimum standards, to which all manufacturers must adhere, are in the R44 standard and the R126 standard regulated. Both apply in parallel.

The older R44 ranks the child seat groups according to the weight of the children. The since 2013 R129 or also arranges "i-size" standard according to body size and additionally tests safety in the event of a side impact.

The child car seat test by stiftung warentest and ADAC, however, sets standards that are about the minimum requirements of the two standards go out. For the current test in summer 2020, the test conditions were also further developed, according to stiftung warentest.

Thus, the weight now plays a greater role in the evaluation of handling and the installation and removal is tested with current car models.

Children’s safety at risk due to operating errors

The safety of the vast majority of child seats is "very good" or "good". Only one seat (osann flux plus) did not come over a "adequate" accident safety in addition, five more seats (maxi-cosi beryl, kinderkraft oneto 3, osann flux isofix, hifold, ingesina) only managed a "satisfactory" result.

But the real problem is operating errors when installing and using the seats, stiftung warentest says.

Accident researchers found that operating errors occur in almost every second ride, that endanger the offspring. Especially when things have to go quickly, the errors become more frequent. The protective effect of the seats can be almost completely cancelled under certain circumstances.

  • The belts are too loose
  • guide aids are not inserted
  • lap and shoulder belts are interchanged
  • The airbag was not turned off
  • The handle is in the wrong position
  • The car seat belt is twisted

In general, according to this test, isofix seats less susceptible to faults, because they are easier to use by simply clicking in the metal hooks.

Child car seats test 2019 v. ADAC& foundation warentest (06/19)

It’s 2019 and again this year stiftung warentest and ADAC examined in their traditional spring test the new models of numerous child car seat manufacturers like cybex, britax roman, besafe or maxi-cosi.

A total of 31 models were tested in the laboratories.

And the result is great. Once was the extremely rare rating for child car seats "very good". The maxi-cosi jade i-size seat was the test winner.

The testers were able to award the grade "good" 22 times.

Parents are therefore left to choose the best model for them from the sheer mass of recommendable models. And to be a little careful not to accidentally put a average (maxi-cosi titan pro) or even defective seat (maxi-cosi tobifix) to buy.

Child car seat test winner 2019: the maxi-cosi jade with the somewhat different concept

Not forward or rearward-facing newborns in the maxi-cosi jade. The baby bath is mounted transverse to the direction of travel and offers very good accident safety.

In addition, the carrycot can also be used as a stroller attachment. Only disadvantage, it turns out a little large and requires more space than other seats. In addition, it can only be used up to about six months of age.

Child car seat test 2019: overall accident safety good and one slip-up

In both frontal and side impacts, child car seats must minimize the risk of injury as much as possible.

In addition to the test winner maxi-cosi jade, the child seats peg perego primo viaggio i-plus, cybex cloud Z i-size, maxi-cosi pebble pro and the cybex sirona Z R i-size also succeed in this "very good".

continues to score well in the "king’s discipline accident safety 18 child car seats still "good" from.

The only "deficient" model is the chicco oasys i-size bebecare. In a simulated frontal impact, the seat belt buckle tore out of the seat shell. The stiftung warentest warns against buying this model.

Child car seats in the 2019 test: this time, too, pollutants lead to devaluation.

The maxi-cosi tobifix is a good seat when it comes to handling, ergonomics and safety.

Unfortunately the testers in the seat cover a value of flame retardant TCPP which exceeded the EU limit value for toys for children under 3 years of age. The overall result was therefore also only "poor".

Child car seat test 2018 v. ADAC& foundation warentest (11/18)

Also in the second child car seat test 2018 the testers from ADAC and stiftung warentest again found some recommendable child car seat models. According to the testers, children and babies can be safely placed in cars and travel without worries for as little as 100 euros.

For the first time in years all child car seats passed the crash test.

Many of the infant carriers and child seats tested offer good accident protection.

Problematic are with some sit however too many pollutants in the covers. This is the reason why four child car seats (successor HY5 TT, osann fox, 2x jane koos isize) with "poor" fail.

test for pollutants

In reference to the child seat successor HY5 TT as well as in the covers of the two tested jane child seats the testers found naphthalene, suspected of causing cancer.

The seat cover of the osann fox contained excessive amounts of the flame retardant TDCP, which can also have a carcinogenic effect.

Unfortunately, according to stiftung warentest, the pollutants could not be washed out of the covers!

test for accident safety

Stiftung warentest and the ADAC sent this time 14 baby car seats and 4 child car seats from 9kg resp. 15 kg in the test laboratory. Almost all models scored "good" and all pass the crash test.

However weaken the maxi-cosi cabrio fix and the osann fox at side impact protection and in this sub-discipline only achieve a "satisfactory".

All in all, according to the current child car seat test, 10 out of 14 models can be recommended.

However, the child seats currently tested do not perform quite as well as the best infant carriers and child seats from previous tests.

Thus, stiftung warentest continues to recommend u.A. The favorable baby car seat cybex aton 5*, the child seat britax romer kid II* as well as the cybex solution seats*.

Child car seat test 2018 – stiftung warentest / ADAC (06/18)

Also in 2018, the foundation warentest and the ADAC together a comprehensive child car seat test. This time some tried suppliers with innovations to score. This is how the testers tested the maxi-cosi axissfix air* first child car seat with airbag in the test laboratory. And with the besafe izi flex fix is a i-size seat for children up to 150 cm body height in the test field. A total of 23 child car seats tested in the test laboratory.

Accident safety test:

The airbags of the maxi-cosi axissfix air* are located in the chest straps and are triggered by special sensors in the seat bracket. The concept is convincing. The additional airbags reduce the stress on the neck and head in the event of a head-on collision. The maxi-cosi axissfix air* scores "good" overall (2.2).

But even without an airbag, most of the tested child car seats scored in the safety test good results, the britax roemer models (swingfix i-size & baby-safe2 i-size*) even managed a "very good".

In contrast, only "satisfactory" safety is offered by the peg perego viaggio 1-2-3 via and the chicco youniverse fix.

However, in the current child car seat test 2018, one seat fell due to serious safety deficiencies, all the way through.

The concord ultimax i-size failed in a frontal impact. The belt holder tore from the backrest.

Test for harmful substances:

In the current 2018 car seat test, two seats also attracted attention due to excessive levels of harmful substances.

In the seat cover of the jane gravity has been the probably carcinogenic naphthalene found. In the seat cover of the avionaut ultralite exceeded the found flame retardant TCPP the limit value by a multiple. Both child car seats were "poor" rated.

  • Naphthalene is a polycyclic hydrocarbon (PAH) and is obtained by the reprocessing of certain petroleum fractions. naphtahalin is mainly used in the plastics industry. It is not normally used specifically in any consumer product, but it may u.A. Contamination occurs with the use of softeners. (source: bfr)
  • The flame retardant TCPP is often used unnecessarily as a softener and is probably carcinogenic

Child car seat test 2017 by ADAC& foundation warentest (11/17)

In the 2017 fall test by stiftung warentest and ADAC, child car seats in all sizes were represented, plus 5 i-size child seats according to the new UN ECE reg. 129. Positive overall result (12x "good"), there were with the seat of jane and the recaro child seatz but also again two "poor" results.

Test accident safety: jane and recaro fail

Twelve of the sixteen baby car seats and child car seats tested were rated "good" overall. These models were particularly convincing in the important test for accident safety.

Except for the concord vario XT-5 and the maxi-cosi rodi XP fix (both "satisfactory"), the child seats scored a "good" or "very good" in accident protection. They withstood the impact simulation without any problems and the respective belt systems diverted the resulting forces accordingly. The models in the current child car seat test exceed the legal requirements in this area, in some cases quite significantly.

However, the jane grand and the recaro child seat optia with smart click base failed the test.

The tested car seats from jane lifted off in a frontal crash, disengaged and were catapulted forward or the hooks of the isofix mount loosened.

The recaro child seat detached from the smart click base in a frontal impact in the current child car seat test and the 15 kilogram dummy was thrown forward.

Test for pollutants

Unlike in previous tests, all current child car seats achieved a "good" or "very good" result in the test!

  • For newborns a baby car seat makes the most sense. They are safe, yet light and easy to handle
  • Reverse as long as possible
  • Isofix fastenings are more comfortable than fastening via the seat belt
  • So far, no long-term child seat (use from birth to 12 years) has been able to convince in the tests. At least two child seats are mandatory.
  • The price is not an indicator of the quality of a seat.

Child car seat test by stiftung warentest& ADAC (spring test 2017)

In the spring of 2017, the child car seat test conducted by stiftung warentest and the ADAC 37 models put to the test. After all 22 child seats achieved a "good" result. Four seats on the other hand, only one "poor". The reasons for this were safety problems or excessive pollutant levels.

accident safety test:

The testers were unable to find a "very good" model in this child car seat test. However, there were numerous "good" models in all categories that narrowly missed out on a "very good" rating. Among them, for example, the britax roemer baby-safe, the cybex aton 5, the cybex pallas as well as the cybex solution models.

greco is the only manufacturer to offer the greco milestone, an all-in-one child car seat, designed to accompany your children from birth to twelve years of age. A good approach, saves the expense of a second or third child seat.

Unfortunately, the greco does not get more than an "adequate" in the child car seat test. In the pollutant test, the seat achieved a "good", in the handling it is still "satisfactory". The weak point is the accident safety in a frontal impact.

Two child car seats also scored "poor".

The casualplay multipolaris fix could not keep the dummy in the seat, despite the catch body.

At saturn ifix the testers criticized the belt routing. In the event of a head-on collision, the seat could cut too deeply into the abdomen and injure the child’s organs or pelvis.

Test for harmful substances

The two models joolz izi go modular by besafe achieved a "very good" or "good" in all sub-areas in this child car seat test. A exception was the pollutant test. In the covers were used to large quantities of the flame retardant TCPP found

Handling test

In the meantime, the majority of child seats are "good" or "very good" in terms of handling.

In this child car seat test, only the axid wolmax fell off the roll.

According to stiftung warentest, the wolmax specially designed for swedish cars, as the support foot has to be fixed with tension belts. The necessary devices are very rarely available in local cars, which makes a cumbersome attachment to the front seat necessary. The axid wolmax got in the handling and in the overall result only a "sufficient".

Special test foldable child car seat: mifold grab-and-go (2017)

The mifold grab-and-go offers an innovative concept. This particular child car seat is very compact, light, foldable and can be wonderfully stowed in the trunk of the car. Actually perfect if you want to carry an extra child (the mifold is approved for children from 4 to 12 years) in the car.

Stiftung warentest examined the mifold grab-and-go more closely and unfortunately found serious safety deficiencies.

The child car seat consists only of a seat cushion and does not offer side protection like conventional child seats. even in a frontal impact the child would be at risk. It sits in the mifold only slightly elevated. This means that the belts do not run ideally. For this purpose, the mifold slips on the car seat.

Finally, the testers also criticized the handling. Buckling up is fiddly, the seat itself is uncomfortable. In addition, there is a high risk of installing the seat incorrectly.

Child car seat test by stiftung warentest& ADAC (autumn test 2016)

The child car seat test in autumn 2016 took 16 child seats under the magnifying glass. There were 9 "good" models. In addition to 4 mediocre results, however, the testers also had to 3 infant car seats with "poor" rate. The price did not correlate at all with a good result. Three inexpensive seats managed a "good", whereas the rather expensive nuna rebl, recaro child seat optia and diono radian 5 with "poor" failed.

Test accident safety:

Besides two "very good" results (cybex aton Q i-size + base) in the accident safety section, eight other seats were rated "good.

But good seats do not even have to be expensive. This is proven by the nania befix SP (circa 49 euro, the vertbaudet juniorsit (circa 80 euro) as well as the hema junior (circa 65 euro).

In contrast, in this child car seat test, stiftung warentest said, three total failures.

1. In the child seat group from 9 kg to max. 36 kg body weight had to be recaro child seat optia with isofix base recaro fix left the test site with a "poor" again.

The reason for this was the too weak retaining clips of the isofix base. During a simulated emergency braking maneuver, the child car seat detached from the base and flew forward.

The manufacturer recaro has since stopped selling the child seat and is offering a free replacement.

In all other test areas, it performed "good" to "very good".

2. In addition, the I-size class was the nuna rebl with "poor" by. Also the nuna rebl failed the crash test. In a frontal impact, the seat tore away from the base and tipped over onto the front seat. A danger for child and passenger.

3. The diono radian 5 is intended for children from birth up to a maximum of 25 kg body weight. In the accident safety section, it achieved an "adequate" rating.

The reason for the ultimately "unsatisfactory" result was the harness straps, which could not be used to securely fasten larger children. The shoulder pads sat too tight to securely fasten kids.

Furthermore, the testers complained that the diono radian 5 supports on the front seat in a rear-facing installation. Car seats are not designed for such large loads in the event of an accident, according to stiftung warentest.

The first child car seat test by ADAC and stiftung warentest in 2016 brought for the first time since the introduction of the new test program (see below for details) a "very good" result. The kiddy evo-luna i-size came out on top of the test field. 17 models followed with a "good" result. A total of 26 child car seats were tested.

child seat test: accident safety, handling& pollutants:

The test winner kiddy evo-luna belongs to the class of i-size seats and offers children from 45 cm to 83 cm body height a "very good" accident protection. With "very good" in this sub-discipline still the joie i-gemm and the two besafe models besafe izi go modular i-size as well as besafe izi kid X2 i-size from.

In the area of seats that grow with the child, the results were mixed. In the group up to 25 kg body weight, no seat received more than a "satisfactory" (hauck varioguard plus) out. bad handling prevented a "good" result.

The chicco seat-up 012 reached a total of only one "sufficient". according to stiftung warentest, the seat offers too many installation options (forward, rearward, with isofix, without isofix, extra top-tether). This makes the handling unnecessarily complicated. Normally, child car seats would be designed for one type of installation.

  • Fastened with the car’s belt system
  • Fastened with isofix: all new cars from 2014 onwards must have retaining lugs for the click system installed
  • With isofix& car belt: the seat is firmly anchored to the car by isofix, the child is strapped in with the car belt.

The kidsembrace batman performed one grade worse. This child car seat is approved for children from 9 kg to 36 kg body weight. The manufacturer stipulates that the backrest must be removed when using the seat for older children. Side impact protection is then no longer provided. For children over 6 years the backrest is too small.

Up to 18 kg body weight is the kiwy SF01 Q-fix designed. The testers have several reasons to advise against buying this model.

The kiwy failed on the one hand side impact test. Children have a risk of injury too high. In addition to this too high pollutant load through the upholstery. It was the plasticizer diisononyl phthalate (DINP) in high quantities found.

  • Can accumulate in fatty tissue, pollutes the environment
  • Is prohibited in toys that can be put in the mouth (source)
