Early visits to the dentist are also important in childhood and can therefore do preventive work. (© luckybusiness – fotolia) For a long time, dental health was only a marginal issue for parents of small children. Of course, regular brushing was done, but it went much further prevention barely. After all, the little ones “only” had their milk teeth, which would soon fail anyway. Fortunately, the view of children’s teeth has changed dramatically in recent years. Because milk teeth are much more than a side effect of growing up.
They are placeholders for the permanent teeth and prepare the way for healthy, orderly rows of teeth in the first place. Your health is important for food intake and thus for the physical development or language training of a child. In addition, it has been shown that early childhood dental diseases such as tooth decay also mean an increased risk of such diseases in adulthood. There are many good reasons to visit a dentist or children’s dentist with the children at an early age.
When should children go to the dentist for the first time?
The system of underground examinations was developed for child health care. In addition to various general medical appointments, three dental examinations belong to this program – in the third, fourth and fifth year of life. However, parents can be recommended to come to the dentist’s office much earlier or in between with their children. After the first birthday or from about one and a half years is a good time to visit the dentist.
This allows children to get used to the atmosphere of the practice very early on. In addition, the dentist can take a quick look at their teeth. Because even at this age, children’s teeth can show damage or incipient dental diseases. They then require immediate treatment or increased attention. More than 10% of children of this age are affected.
How often should children go to the dentist?
In principle, the same rhythm applies to children in adults: Two visits to the dentist per year – one every six months – should be the rule. If a group prophylaxis with visits to a dentist takes place in kindergarten or kindergarten, an appointment may not be necessary. In the event of abnormalities or major problems with caries, the time is reduced to next Dentist visit accordingly.
As with the big ones, the same applies to the little ones: regular inspections identify early onset dental diseases or other undesirable developments and can be treated as quickly as possible. This simplifies and shortens treatment or healing and prevents long-term consequences.
Pay health insurance companies all dental appointments for children?
The three dental examinations as a supplement to preventive care at the pediatrician are always part of the health insurance program. There are no costs for parents to visit the dentist in kindergarten. In addition, statutory insurance companies generally pay up to two visits to the dentist per year, even outside of these plans. Until the children have reached the age of six. If there is an increased risk of caries or caries disease, three appointments are even taken over. The health insurers are aware of the high value of this prophylaxis and are accordingly accommodating in assuming the costs.
