In general, the majority of infections occur intraoperatively, ie during the operation, either through the patient’s own microorganisms, through airborne contamination or through the surgical team. Thanks to gentle surgical techniques and good hygiene measures, the infection rates are very low – depending on the type of intervention under one percent or between a few percent. Nevertheless, it is also necessary to prevent these few cases. This is precisely what the antibiotic prophylaxis serves.
