What is the antibiotic prophylaxis?

This is the preventive use of antibiotics (antimicrobials) to prevent infection. It is used in many areas of medicine. In general, it is meant perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis, in which the administration of antibiotic before or during a surgical procedure.

The postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis (taking the antibiotics after surgery) is controversial, as it may be due to the prolonged use u. a. can lead to antibiotic resistance.

Why is antibiotic prophylaxis so important?

The prevention of infections is of great importance in dentistry. In particular, when placing implants, in the tooth removal, root planing, root canal treatment and other surgical interventions, it is important to prevent infections of the bone and soft tissue.

Complications caused by inflammation can negate the desired success in the case of implants even lead to the loss of artificial tooth roots. Antibiotic prophylaxis avoids the growth of pathogens.

In general, the majority of infections occur intraoperatively, ie during the operation, either through the patient’s own microorganisms, through airborne contamination or through the surgical team. Thanks to gentle surgical techniques and good hygiene measures, the infection rates are very low – depending on the type of intervention under one percent or between a few percent. Nevertheless, it is also necessary to prevent these few cases. This is precisely what the antibiotic prophylaxis serves. It is an additional measure to reduce the risk of infection in certain dental procedures.

For whom is the antibiotic prophylaxis intended or suitable?

To an antibiotic prophylaxis advises Dr. Seidel whenever patients have immunodeficiencies or open fractures, and when major surgery and implantation are required. Certain procedures involve a higher risk of postoperative complications, which is countered by antibiotics. These include in the dental field:

How is the antibiotic prophylaxis in the practice of Dr. med. Seidel off?

Prophylaxis combines all measures for the prevention, early detection and timely treatment of diseases that basically affect all people. In the dental field, the measures range from brushing teeth and professional teeth cleaning to tooth restoration. Antibiotic prophylaxis, on the other hand, affects only a minority of patients who need extra protection after surgery.
