Pollutant class euro 6: which sticker do gasoline and diesel vehicles get??

For both petrol and diesel, the sticker for euro 6 is green.

Currently, the green sticker is the best possible sticker and entitles you to drive in all environmental zones in germany without restrictions.

in 2016, the federal environment ministry decided against introducing a blue sticker for euro 6 standard diesel vehicles. However, since there have been increasing discussions about diesel driving bans in german cities, it cannot be ruled out that the blue sticker for euro-6 diesels will be introduced after all.

class euro 6 vehicles: which sticker are you allowed to drive with??

In many cities in germany, car emissions are causing a high level of pollution in the air. Even before the first diesel driving bans were introduced in 2018, measures were taken to reduce emissions of pollutants, namely through the establishment of the environmental zones. These may only be driven on by vehicles that meet a certain euro standard (euro 4, euro 5, euro 6 etc.). A sticker on the windshield provides information on which class the corresponding vehicle belongs to and whether it is thus is entitled to, to drive in the environmental zone.

While the diesel driving bans were only introduced to reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides the environmental zones have a much broader purpose. In which emission class The classification of a vehicle is based not only on how much nitrogen oxide it emits, but also on how much pollutants it emits even after:

  • Whose carbon monoxide-emissions
  • The output of hydrocarbons
  • The mass and number of fine dust particles, that the vehicle causes

With each introduction of a new emissions class, we have the criteria tightened, which a vehicle must fulfill in order to be classified in this category. Which in turn means: the higher the emission class, the less polluting is the vehicle. Since 2014, the best possible class for both gasoline and diesel is the euro 6. But what sticker is there for this?

Is there a green or blue sticker at euro 6?

Currently there are six different euro pollutant classes, starting from euro 1 to euro 6, respectively. Even seven classes, if the euro 0 to include all vehicles that do not even meet the requirements for euro 1). At the same time, however, there are only four pollutant groups:

  1. No sticker
  2. Red sticker
  3. Yellow sticker
  4. Green sticker

For vehicles with Euro 6, the sticker is green

For vehicles with euro 6 the sticker is green.

Currently, diesel vehicles in emission classes euro 6 the green sticker. The same applies to diesel of the classes euro 4 and euro 5. for euro 3 there is the yellow sticker, unless the car has a particulate reduction system, then it gets the green sticker. with euro 2, diesel trucks get the red sticker, but with a particulate filter they get the yellow sticker. diesel with euro 0 or euro 1 will not get an environmental sticker at all. Euro 1 with filter system can also receive the red sticker.

gasoline in turn almost always receive the green sticker. The only exceptions are vehicles of the euro 0 and euro 1 classes, if they are over no regulated catalytic converter (G-cat) have.

It cannot be ruled out that sooner or later a blue sticker for diesel with euro 6 is introduced, but currently exists not yet. For further information, please refer to the following pages of this guide.

How to find out if your vehicle is eligible for a euro 6 environmental badge

So now you know that the euro sticker 6 green is. If you are still unsure, which environmental badge your diesel gets, so you probably do not know its emission class at all. This is not a problem, because we tell you how to get these out.

To do this, all you have to do is look into the registration certificate part 1 throw. There in field 14 if the pollutant class is indicated, z. B. "EUR06". Alternatively, you can also take a look at the field 14.1 throw. You will find here the so called emission code of your vehicle. If the papers were issued before 1. October 2005, the number is instead in the vehicle registration document under "key number to 1". For both the last two digits this number is decisive or. Last two digits followed by two letters for newer vehicles.

These are the numbers you are looking for in the following table and you can already see to which pollutant class your vehicle belongs your car or motorcycle counts. So you will know which environmental badge you will get:

emission code number: last two digits or. last two numbers + two letters pollutant class
00, 05-08, 10, 15, 17, 19, 20, 23, 24, 88 euro 0 (non-polluting vehicle)
01-04, 09, 11-14, 16, 18, 21, 22, 77 euro 1
25-29, 34, 35, 40, 41, 49, 71 euro 2
30, 31, 36, 37, 42, 44-61 euro 3
32, 33, 38, 39, 43, 62-70 euro 4
35AO to 35EO euro 5a
35FO to 35MO euro 5b
36NO to 36VO euro 6
36WO to 36YO; 36BA to 36BC euro 6b
36ZA to 36ZF; 36AA to 36AF euro 6c
36ZG to 36ZI; 36AG to 36AI; 36BG to 36BI euro 6d-TEMP
36ZJ to 36ZL; 36AJ to 36AL euro 6d

All vehicles whose emission code number as last two digits is the 36 therefore belong to the euro 6. The sticker that is issued for these is therefore the green.

The emission classes for trucks and buses by the way, are similar to those for cars and motorcycles, but are not identical. How you can find out about them, you can find out here.

When is the blue sticker for euro 6 diesel coming??

Is a blue sticker coming soon for Euro 6?

a blue sticker for euro 6 coming soon?

Up to now, there have been no emission limits for diesel vehicles of the classes euro 4, euro 5 and euro 6 the same sticker: the green. This, in turn, means that a car that is up to 250 milligrams of nitrogen oxides emissions per kilometer driven (euro 4), as well as unrestricted the environmental zone may be driven as one whose emissions are only at 80 mg/km lie (euro 6).

As early as 2014, the idea of introducing a blue sticker for diesel vehicles with euro 5 and 6 a blue badge introduce. Accordingly, blue environmental zones should also be set up, in which driving is only permitted with the blue sticker. The project has been of the german environmental aid association, the Friends of the earth Germany (BUND) and the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) supported, ultimately, however, the federal ministry for the environment, nature conservation, construction and nuclear safety decided in august 2016 to against a blue particulate emissions sticker for euro 6 and euro 5 diesel. The argument put forward was that the green environmental zones are sufficient.

But since then the attitude to air pollution control measures changed in the cities. In view of fridays-for-future protests and the already noticeable effects of climate change, the awareness around the need to reduce pollutants now much more present in the minds of the population than it was in 2016. Particularly in view of the diesel driving bans, which will only be with low nitrogen oxide emissions into the cities, a further visual distinction between the higher pollutant classes therefore appears to be necessary again.

It is therefore not to exclude, that sooner or later we will not a blue euro 6 sticker introduced for diesel cars. Two different color shades would also be possible:
