How to choose the right product from the Portable CD Player test or comparison above

- Portable CD players run on mains power as well as on batteries. Thanks to the carrying handle, they can be taken anywhere and you can also enjoy the music outside your own four walls.
- Depending on the offer, the portable devices can play MP3 CDs and cassettes in addition to normal CDs. In addition, all models have an integrated radio.
- If you would like to connect an audio amplifier, headphones or other data carriers to your player, you should pay attention to an audio, headphone or USB connection.
If you look at the picture of a portable CD player, the association of the motivated English teacher with a work task for listening comprehension is not far. Even without an existing socket, he was able to treat English sentences for a quarter of an hour and then comfortably take the compact player with him to the next class. However, a portable CD player is not per se a torture instrument for bored schoolchildren. We would be happy to present further properties and special features in our portable CD player comparison 2019/2020.
1. What is a portable CD player?
In order for a CD player to be mobile, it must have a handle and battery operation. It is reminiscent of a ghetto blaster, but is significantly smaller and more compact. We show you the advantages and disadvantages of this structure in a portable CD player comparison.
- compact and light
- mobile with battery operation
- integrated radio
- large controls
- intuitive operation
- small sound box – reduced sound quality
- limited volume
Note: Basically, a portable CD player is equipped with a power supply unit to reduce battery consumption with an existing socket.
2. What does a portable CD player do??
New chic: portable retro CD players.
There are also various types in the portable CD player category that play different media. Radio with CD is part of the basic equipment, MP3 and cassette, however, do not offer all devices.
If you buy a portable CD player, it can play any CDs that are already pressed and cannot be overwritten. In addition, most models from the portable CD player comparison have the function of playing CD-R. These are blank blanks that can be burned once. Players with CD-R playback are ideal if you have a lot of self-burned music CDs. The best portable CD players have the necessary technology to read CD-RW, i.e. CDs that can be replayed several times. However, this function is usually rarely required, since mostly simple blank CDs are used to burn your own playlists.
The older models of portable CD players still do not have MP3 compatibility. When producing new players, however, manufacturers such as Philips and Sony are increasingly relying on MP3 playback, which enables the user to play burned MP3 CDs as well. A CD player with MP3 has the advantage that you can listen to more than twice as many songs in a row without having to change the CD. A data CD can hold up to 800 MB (megabytes); a normal audio file is approx. 60-70 MB in size, an MP3 file on average only approx. 3 MB.
Note: A portable CD player with USB offers another possibility to play compressed music files. Instead of playing on the MP3 player, first play the music on a USB stick and then plug it into the CD player. Thanks to the USB output, you have won a CD-MP3 player.

If you prefer a radio CD player you should make sure that the keywords "FM", "FM" or "AM" are included in the product description. They stand for different frequency ranges of a radio.
- FM and FM: “Ultra-short wave” (FM) and “frequency modulation” (FM) are now used synoynm. They cover all radio stations in the frequency range between 87.6 and 107.9 MHz.
- AT THE: All long, medium and short waves are summarized under “amplitude modulation” (AM). These “waves” have a greater range than FM, but are also more susceptible to interference.
Basically, the train for the cassette left years ago. However, if you still grew up with the rectangular sound carriers, you will have hidden one or the other music or radio play collection at home. If you don’t want your cassette collection to get dusty, a CD player with a cassette deck is ideal.
If you are still one of those who do not want to accept that the age of cassette CD players is a thing of the past, we recommend the following video:
3. Buying advice for portable CD players
As already stated, a portable CD player can be both an MP3 player and a radio CD player. We would like to clarify which specific features a mobile player can have using various parameters that we have compiled for you based on common portable CD player tests.
Not only on the television, but also on the CD player, the inputs and outputs for special cables or sticks are increasing. This table gives you a brief overview:
|Audio output||If you want to connect the player to an audio amplifier every now and then, you need the corresponding audio output on the device. Via a coaxial cable, e.g. a cinch connector, you can connect the amplifier and radio recorder.|
|Headphone output||A portable CD player with loudspeaker is a fine thing, but sometimes you want to enjoy your hard rock in peace and without disturbing the others. In this case, you should never miss an output for headphones. It is usually a 3.5 mm jack plug.|
|USB port||If your music collection consists largely of MR3 files stored on the PC or an external hard drive, a connection for USB is worthwhile. The compressed music files, e.g. from the iPod, can be played on the mini CD player.|
|If your CD player is to be portable and has a video output, we unfortunately have to disappoint you. The combination of CD, radio and video can only be found in a compact system. The combination of CD and DVD offers every commercially available DVD-CD player.|
3.2. Weight and dimensions
If the CD player is to be portable, a light weight of the player is also recommended. The portable models usually weigh no more than 3 kg – they even stay under 2 kg and can be easily transported from place to place. The size is also significantly smaller than that of a hi-fi CD player. The compact CD players also fit in the bookshelf or find space on the windowsill and are often used as a kitchen radio with CD function.
Everyday I’m shuffling!
If you want to randomize the order of the tracks or play a track repeatedly, you can use players with shuffle and repeat modes.
If the CD player is to be portable, you have to expect a reduced sound quality compared to a complex stereo system. Even a portable CD player with 12 volts will not achieve the sound quality of a ghetto blaster due to the small volume of its small body. Especially with increased volume or bass-heavy songs, music lovers usually have to cut corners. For this reason, some models of portable CD radios have one Bass boost, with which the bass can be amplified, regardless of the volume. However, the function is only worthwhile if you prefer listening to bass-strong music such as electro or hip-hop. In other genres, however, a strong bass can be distracting.

5. Portable CD players at the Stiftung Warentest
If you browse through the test archive of the Stiftung Warentest in search of a portable CD player test, it becomes clear that the term "portable CD player" is used synonymously in many places. Not only the classic portable CD player is meant, but also a Discman and MP3 player are assigned to this category. Unfortunately, under the test title "Portable CD-MP3 players" in the 01/2003 edition, there is only a comparison of selected discmen and two MD recorders, with products from the brands Philips and Sony doing best. There is no portable CD player comparison winner.
6. Questions and answers about the portable CD player
6.1. Portable CD players are suitable for people with poor eyesight?
The AEG CDP 4212 can even play MP3 CDs.
Basically, every music system is also suitable for visually impaired people, as they are able to perceive auditory environmental influences. It can be assumed that devices with little or large controls are always advantageous, since it does not require much effort to get them going. In this respect, the compact and limited to a few functions portable CD players are suitable for blind people.
6.2. What do the abbreviations CDP and PCD stand for??
Both CDP and PCD are popular shortcuts for product names of portable mini CD players, also known as Discman. For example, the companies AEG and Roadstar each have a Discman in their range under the names CDP 4212 (AEG) and PCD-495MP (Roadstar). The Soundmaster company, however, does not use the abbreviations.
6.3. What is the best portable kids CD player?
The player can be individually pretted up with a sticker set.
Just for that nursery a portable CD player with an integrated loudspeaker is ideal. From a pragmatic point of view, it takes up little space and is not a major financial loss if it breaks. In addition, many children enjoy taking their music through the apartment in the mini CD player and having it with them in the garden. But not every product may be suitable as a children’s CD player. In many cases, colored portable CD players with an audiobook function are recommended. Sometimes a sticker set is also included, which can be used to decorate a portable CD player for small children. In order to protect the children’s sensitive hearing, it is worth buying a children’s CD player with a low maximum volume. This also applies to the baby CD player.
6.4. You have to clean portable CD players regularly?
Even with very frequent use, a CD player does not have to be cleaned regularly. However, it is worthwhile not to miss it when wiping the dust weekly, as the CD and drive are sensitive to dust particles. Dropouts or jumps when playing a music compact disc are usually an indication that there is dust in the drive or on the disc. In this case, two cleaning methods are available:
- Cleaning the compact disc: With a mild cleaner, such as the one used for cleaning records or glasses, you can carefully clean CDs with a microfiber cloth. It is best to go inside out to avoid scratches in the circular reading track.
- Cleaning the drive: Before you bother to uncover the drive, you can insert a so-called cleaning CD. It is equipped with soft brushes that pick up small dust particles. If this method is unsuccessful, you will find instructions on how to manually clean the drive on this page.
