Complications and risks in wisdom tooth surgery

At a glance:

  • Real complications are very rare
  • Exact diagnostics (3-D-X-ray) enables low-complication procedure
  • Common are low pain and swelling of the cheek (thick cheek)

Thankfully, complications during or after wisdom tooth removal are very rare. They can be largely avoided by careful planning and regular checks after wisdom tooth surgery.

Nevertheless, I would like to explain to you the conceivable risks and complications:

  • Inflammation (wound infection)
  • rebleeding
  • Pain
  • Pain
  • Damage to the lower jaw or the posterior tongue nerve
  • broken jaw
  • Damage to neighboring teeth
  • Opening and eventually inflammation of the maxillary sinus
  • Slipping (dislocation) of the tooth or parts of teeth into the antrum or soft tissue

Inflammation of the wound (wound infection)

At a glance:

Wound infections mainly occur in the lower jaw when bacteria-rich saliva flows into the wound. The pain then increases. The wound should be cleaned in such a case with us

Inflammation occurs as harmful bacteria invade the wound. This will interrupt the healing process. The classic features of inflammation are pain, swelling, redness of the edges of the wound, and increased temperature (fever) in case of increased inflammation. Whether or not the cure is going well depends on many factors: the strength of the immune system, blood clotting, tissue perfusion and many more. Especially during interventions in the oral cavity, many bacteria get into the wound, because in saliva very many bacteria are at home. The question is whether the body’s immune system is sufficient to fight these bacteria. If the bacteria win, then the inflammation becomes established. Not only the number of bacteria plays a role, but also the type.

There is a suspicion of inflammation or wound healing disorder when pain sets or existing pain increases. Then you should first keep calm and try to make the pain bearable by taking another painkiller. Contact us and arrange a timely appointment. A moist, mild cooling relieves the pain and swelling. Please spare yourself and the wound area. Eat only soft, cold or lukewarm food, but be sure to eat and drink enough to keep you active. As a rule, the wound is then resurfaced under local anesthesia and an analgesic strip is inserted into the wound.

Pain

At a glance:

The pain after pulling the wisdom teeth are well controlled with Ibuprofen 300. A daily dose of 4 tablets is sufficient and should not be exceeded.
