Professional dental cleaning – costs and interesting facts at a glance

Professional dental cleaning is recommended by dentists once or twice a year. In addition to tartar removal, dental plaque is also carefully removed. This prevents tooth decay and periodontitis. Already from 50,- Euro you can have your teeth cleaned by a professional.

This costs a professional tooth cleaning

Professional dental cleaning costs between 50 and 250 euros. The average price for a treatment in Germany, depending on the state, condition and number of teeth treated, is between 75,- and 85,- Euro.

The costs also depend on a billing rate that each dentist sets for himself. This amounts to approx. 3.50 euros per tooth for a normal amount of work. If the expenditure is higher, the costs can amount to approx. 5.50 euro per tooth.

In addition to the billing rate, the costs also depend on the use of professional equipment and materials. Not every dentist has an ultrasound device, for example.

The number of teeth is also decisive. It is not always necessary to have the full set of teeth (28 to 32 teeth) cleaned. It is often enough to decide to clean your molars, for example. However, ask your dentist first.

The time and effort required for cleaning are also decisive for the amount of costs. If the patient has a lot of tartar and a persistent plaque, the costs can be significantly higher compared to a patient with little tartar. In addition, services such as the removal of tartar under the gumline must be paid extra.

The procedure of a professional dental cleaning

If you are attending the appointment for professional cleaning, a preliminary talk will be held first. During this interview you will usually be asked questions about your cleaning behaviour. Sometimes you will also receive valuable tips on the subject of oral and dental hygiene.

After the mouth, teeth and gums have been examined, the depth of the gum pockets is measured. In the next step, the teeth are cleaned with special tools. Soft plaque is usually removed with ultrasound equipment, whereas hand instruments are used for hard plaque.

If you drink coffee frequently or smoke cigarettes, discolorations on your teeth are removed with a powder jet device. The soiled interdental spaces are cleaned with dental floss and small special brushes.

Finally, the teeth are given a polish to smooth out roughened surfaces. In addition, a fluoride gel is applied to the teeth to protect them.

Health insurances and dental cleaning

In principle, professional dental cleaning is a private service that must also be carried by the patient. However, more and more statutory health insurance companies are paying a surcharge if you decide to have your teeth cleaned.

The AOK pays for example for adults a subsidy of 40,- Euro per year. Children and adolescents receive a subsidy of 50 euros, as dental care is more difficult with fixed braces.

Private health insurance companies, on the other hand, usually cover the full cost of professional dental cleaning. Simply look at the agreed benefits.

Professional tooth cleaning – useful?

Since not every corner of your mouth can be reached with a toothbrush, it is a good idea to have a professional tooth cleaning done once or twice a year. This way, tartar can be thoroughly removed and caries or periodontitis can be avoided. Broken teeth usually cost much more than a simple tooth cleaning.

The risks associated with professional dental cleaning are very low. So-called powder jet equipment only roughens the teeth, but the subsequent polishing makes the tooth smooth again. If you take blood-thinning medication, you should inform your dentist before cleaning.

By the way, you need not be afraid of pain, because tooth cleaning is a mechanical cleaning. If you have sensitive teeth, you can still undergo professional tooth cleaning. Those who have implants, veneers, crowns or other dental prostheses do not need to worry either. Here, too, cleaning is carried out with the greatest care to ensure that nothing happens.
