MBA Prerequisite: Professional experience

In addition to a first academic degree (such as a bachelor’s degree or diploma), work experience is one of the most important prerequisites that applicants have to fulfill for admission to an MBA program.

There are also MBA programs that you can enter right after you graduate; However, the majority of the MBA offer is aimed at the so-called “Young Professionals”, ie young people with academic education who are already working in a profession. This is also reflected in the minimum age of MBA undergraduates, which is more than 30 years in Germany.

MBA Requirements: Professional experience

In the past, many business schools and colleges (especially in the US) were often more flexible in terms of work experience, but this has now become established as an integral part of the admission scheme. This can be attributed mainly to two factors:

    On the one hand, many MBA programs partly build on the experience and knowledge acquired in everyday working life. In addition, they aim for a lively exchange between the participants, so that these benefit each other from their experiences can.

  • On the other hand, the providers also hope that their graduates will be able to return to work as soon as possible after their graduation – which will then have a positive effect on the reputation of the universities.

    • How much work experience is necessary?

    How much work experience you have to bring always depends on the individual provider. As a rule, at least one to two years are assumed, but it can also be significantly more. An Executive MBA can sometimes take at least five years.

    Differences can also exist in the recognition of professional experience, which was already done before the first degree (eg Bachelor, diploma). While some providers recognize these (at least in part), others only accept professional services that have been provided after the first degree and that have a direct professional connection to it.

    In fact, there are quite a few colleges and business schools that offer some room for maneuver in terms of work experience or accept alternative benefits as an admission qualification. For example, there is the chance that a very good final grade of the first degree course or good personal justification can compensate for a lack of professional experience. On the other hand, the experience gained at some institutes may even be so high that in some cases they can replace the first university degree and thus also give applicants without an academic education access to an MBA degree.

    Special case Executive MBA (EMBA)

    As indicated above, the EMBA study programs are a special case. The so-called “Executive Master of Business Administration” is aimed specifically only at those with a long-standing management and management experience who would like to qualify for senior positions.

    In this case The providers usually require a professional experience of at least five years; Depending on the degree program, it may also be possible for the applicant to already have practice from the management area or a comparable leading position.
