Professional teeth cleaning »cost factors, prices and more

How much does professional tooth cleaning cost??

Almost everyone goes to the dentist once a year. In addition to checking dental health, professional tooth cleaning (PZR) is also on the agenda for many. It is considered the best means of preventing tooth decay and periodontitis, since it is significantly more effective than brushing your teeth. But what does the treatment cost? We clarify this and many other questions on this topic in an interview with the cost check expert.

What will this cost me?

Check cost: The costs for the PZR fluctuate strongly, since the dentist bills this treatment according to the private fee schedule.

factor 1x sentence 2.3 times the rate 3.5 times the rate
per tooth 1.57 EUR EUR 3.62 EUR 5.51
complete bit (28 teeth) EUR 43.96 101.36 EUR 154.28 EUR

So you have to on average around 80 EUR count for professional teeth cleaning.

Only a few dentists charge the simple fee rate. With normal workload, 2.3 times the rate is usually calculated. If the implementation of dental prophylaxis involves more effort, for example because a lot of tartar has to be removed, the costs are correspondingly higher. Then the 3.5-fold rate is usually charged.

The costs vary greatly depending on the measures carried out. How expensive professional tooth cleaning becomes depends on the number of teeth to be cared for. The use of special equipment and materials also affects the price. If, for example, a powder jet device is used, this is reflected in the costs as well as the additional sealing of the occlusal surfaces.

Our tip: According to Section 630c (3) of the German Civil Code (BGB), dentists are obliged to inform patients about the costs incurred before treatment. Therefore, ask for a written estimate in advance. By comparing prices, you can save many euros with this prophylactic measure.

I am with the same dentist as my wife, but my PZR is more expensive. Why?

Check cost: The costs for professional tooth cleaning are based on the individual teeth and the condition of the teeth. If a patient goes to prophylaxis frequently, fewer deposits usually have to be removed. Due to the lower effort, the treatment is significantly cheaper. Every single tooth is calculated, i.e. if some teeth are missing, this affects the price.

The health insurance company pays these costs?

Check cost: The PZR is a private service, so you have to pay for the costs yourself. However, many statutory health insurance companies have recognized that this prophylactic measure offers many advantages. For this reason, more and more health insurance companies are granting an annual grant. It is therefore worth asking your own insurance company whether the costs will be covered in full or at least in part.

If you have supplementary dental insurance, it depends on the contractual conditions. The costs are often fully reimbursed. If this is not the case, it is worth adapting the insurance accordingly if you have a PZR carried out regularly.

How useful is professional tooth cleaning?

Check cost: Like so many medical questions, this cannot be answered across the board. Almost all experts believe, however, that thorough brushing of teeth twice a day is not sufficient to prevent tooth decay and periodontitis, since narrower areas of the dentition cannot be reached with interdental brushes and dental floss. The toothbrush has no chance against tartar, discoloration and stubborn deposits.

Professional teeth cleaning, on the other hand, also thoroughly cleans those areas of the mouth that you can hardly reach yourself. This significantly minimizes the risk of dental diseases. Crowns and bridges also benefit from thorough care. The lifespan of this expensive denture can be extended if professional teeth cleaning is carried out regularly.

What is done in professional tooth cleaning?

Check cost: Professional teeth cleaning takes place in several steps:

The interdental spaces in particular are often very dirty

  • First, the plaque is made visible using a plaque test.
  • Tartar is removed thoroughly with hand instruments such as scalers and curettes or with a special airflow ultrasound device.
  • Scrapers, interdental brushes or dental floss are used for deposits in the interdental spaces.
  • Tooth stains from luxury foods such as coffee or tea are usually removed with a powder jet device.
  • The teeth are then rinsed with water and dried with air.
  • After thorough polishing, exposed tooth necks and the finest cracks are sealed with a special paste.
  • Optionally, fluoride money is then applied.

What is the difference to tartar removal?

Check cost: In professional tooth cleaning, unlike tartar removal, not only the hard, but also the soft deposits are removed without residue.

How long will the treatment take?

Check cost: This depends on the method used and the effort. As a rule, this prophylactic measure takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

How often should I get professional teeth cleaning done??

Check cost: So that the PZR shows the desired success, it should be carried out regularly. A gap of half a year or a year is considered optimal, depending on how much you tend to develop tartar. Shorter intervals may also be necessary for implant wearers, smokers, heavy coffee or tea drinkers or periodontitis patients.

For whom, professional tooth cleaning is particularly important?

Check cost: There are groups of people who often suffer from gum disease and should therefore have a PZR more often in the year. Which includes:

  • standing teeth
  • a strong tendency to gum infections
  • deep tooth pockets

you should have professional teeth cleaning done every three months.

Teeth cleaning also helps against bad breath?

Teeth cleaning usually doesn’t help against bad breath Check cost: Unpleasant smelling breath is caused by odor-causing bacteria in over 90 percent of cases. These are particularly hidden in the niches and interdental spaces that brush and dental floss cannot reach. Therefore, bad breath is difficult to get by, even with the best oral hygiene. Due to the thorough removal of biofilm and plaque, the breath is already pleasantly fresh after the first professional tooth cleaning.

Do not be afraid to address your problem during treatment and get suitable medicinal rinses as well as special oral hygiene recommendations. These prevent bacterial resettlement. In combination with the regular, professional tooth cleaning, these measures keep the breath permanently fresh and you can encounter situations close to the body in everyday life.

I’m pregnant. Can I still keep the appointment?

Check cost: Professional tooth cleaning is particularly important for expectant mothers. By removing plaque and tartar, you can effectively prevent pregnancy gingivitis and pregnancy periodontitis. These tooth bed diseases increase the risk of premature birth. A PZR is therefore recommended during pregnancy.

The cost of professional tooth cleaning as part of the prophylaxis for pregnant women corresponds to that of ordinary PZR.

PZR hurts?

Check cost: The treatment is almost always painless, so anesthesia is not necessary. However, if you have exposed tooth necks, you may find prophylaxis uncomfortable. This also applies to cleaning the teeth directly on the gum line. In these cases, ask for a surface anesthetic in gel form, which ensures painless treatment with practically no side effects.

One reason for complaints can be the rough handling of the dentist or dental assistant. This is the case, for example, if the powder of the airflow is applied to the gum groove with excessive pressure. In this case, do not be afraid to point out your pain and ask for more careful work.

Why am I in pain after the treatment??

Teeth cleaning can cause pain during and after cleaning Check cost: The overlying tartar forms a kind of protective layer that covers the fine dentinal tubules of the tooth necks. This is removed during professional tooth cleaning, which can lead to pain sensations, especially when it comes to cold and heat stimuli. Even people with deep gum pockets can feel pain after the PZR. However, these pass after two to three days and, if necessary, can be easily managed with a light pain reliever.

I have a dentist phobia, should I still have the PZR done?

Check cost: If you are afraid of visiting the dentist, the PZR may also make you feel uncomfortable. Possible pain can be almost completely prevented by the surface anesthesia with gel already mentioned. Alternatively, you can have this treatment done in a practice that specializes in anxiety patients and hypnosis techniques.

There are also risks?

Check cost: Sometimes professional teeth cleaning is criticized for allegedly attacking your teeth. If the instruments are used correctly and carefully, the benefits far outweigh them. If carried out improperly, however, the gums may become very irritated or even injured.

Attention: If you are taking blood-thinning agents, if you are wearing a pacemaker or an artificial heart valve, you should inform the dentist or the dental specialist before the treatment. In this case, powder jet and ultrasound devices must not be used, as this could impair the function of the pacemaker. On the other hand, you should take an antibiotic prophylactically to prevent dangerous infections caused by penetrating germs.
