Dentists recommend having professional teeth cleaning done every 6 months. Although this is an effective preventive measure against tooth decay damage, the costs are not covered by the statutory health insurance. Many private dental insurance companies, however, provide professional teeth cleaning in their range of services and reimburse the treatment costs at least in part.
What exactly does "professional teeth cleaning" mean??
Professional tooth cleaning, like the annual check-ups, is an important measure for the prevention of dental diseases, such as tooth decay or periodontitis (inflammation of the tooth support system). It not only helps to avoid annoying, unpleasant dental treatments, but also the costs for the treatment of To save caries consequences, such as fillings, root canal treatments and dentures. Professional tooth cleaning is usually carried out by the dentist himself or a suitably trained assistant and takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The teeth are cleaned of plaques more thoroughly than with daily tooth cleaning at home, interdental spaces are cleaned and hard plaque is removed.
For professional teeth cleaning, however, there are costs of around € 60 to € 100. Since their implementation is recommended every 6 months, costs of approx. € 120 to € 200 per year are incurred by the patient, which are not covered by the statutory health insurance.
What does dental supplement insurance pay for professional tooth cleaning?
A good dental supplementary insurance usually covers the costs of professional tooth cleaning completely. The benefits differ considerably depending on the tariff. Some providers do provide for professional tooth cleaning, but limit it to a certain maximum amount (e.g. € 160 / year for the Mega.Dent der Halleschen tariff). Under certain circumstances, however, this maximum amount increases if the teeth are cleaned by certain contracted doctors, as is the case, for example, with the KDT85 + KDBE tariff of the DKV (limitation to € 150 / year, € 200 / year for contracted dentists). Still other tariffs leave an own share of the costs with the insured (e.g. 15% with Barmenia ZGU +).
Some providers offer particularly extensive services in this area and do not limit the reimbursement amount (e.g. Ergo Direkt ZAB + ZBB + ZBE or Württembergische V1). However, these tariffs often only cover the costs up to twice per calendar year.
Accordingly, before taking out additional dental insurance, it is advisable to carefully consider whether and how often professional teeth cleaning should be used. If you regularly go to professional teeth cleaning, you already benefit from supplementary dental insurance with healthy teeth and indirectly get back a high proportion of the contributions.
