Professional tooth cleaning – an overview of costs and things worth knowing

What does professional tooth cleaning cost??

Professional teeth cleaning is recommended by dentists once or twice a year. In addition to the removal of tartar, the dental plaque is also carefully removed. Caries and periodontitis are prevented. You can have your teeth cleaned by a professional from just € 50.

That costs professional teeth cleaning

Professional tooth cleaning costs between 50 and 250 euros. On average in Germany, depending on the state, condition and number of teeth, you pay between 75 and 85 euros for a treatment.

The costs are also based on a billing rate that each dentist sets for himself. With a normal workload, this amounts to approx. 3.50 euros per tooth. If the effort is higher, the costs can be around 5.50 euros per tooth.

cost factor costs
Cost per tooth 3.50 to 5.50 euros
teeth cleaning 50 to 250 euros

All prices are rough guidelines including VAT and can of course vary.

In addition to the billing rate, the costs also depend on the use of professional equipment and materials. Not every dentist has an ultrasound device, for example.

The number of teeth is also crucial. It is not always necessary to have the full teeth (28 to 32 teeth) cleaned. Often it is enough if you e.g. opt for cleaning the molars. However, check with your dentist first.

The time and effort involved in cleaning are also decisive for the amount of the costs. If the patient has a lot of tartar and a stubborn coating, this can result in significantly higher costs compared to a patient with little tartar. In addition, services such as the removal of tartar under the gum line will be paid for additionally.

Professional teeth cleaning procedure

If you make the appointment for a professional cleaning, a preliminary discussion will be carried out first. During this conversation, you are usually asked questions about your cleaning behavior. Sometimes you can also get valuable tips on oral and dental care.

After examining the mouth, teeth and gums, the depth of the gum pockets is measured. In the next step, the teeth are cleaned with special tools. Soft deposits are usually removed with ultrasound devices, whereas hand instruments are used for hard deposits.

If you have discoloration on your teeth due to frequent coffee drinking or smoking cigarettes, these will be removed with a powder jet device. The dirty interdental spaces are cleaned using dental floss and small, special brushes.

Finally, the teeth are given a polish to smooth roughened surfaces again. A fluoride gel is also applied to the teeth to protect them.

Health insurance companies and teeth cleaning

In principle, professional tooth cleaning is a private service that must also be borne by yourself. However, more and more statutory health insurance companies are paying a surcharge if you choose to have your teeth cleaned.

For example, the AOK pays a subsidy of 40 euros per year for adults. Children and adolescents receive a subsidy of 50 euros because dental care is difficult due to fixed braces.

Private health insurance companies, on the other hand, usually cover the full cost of professional teeth cleaning. Just have a look at the agreed services.

Professional teeth cleaning – sensible?

Since not every corner of your mouth can be reached with a toothbrush, it makes sense to have professional teeth cleaning done once or twice a year. In this way, stuck tartar can be removed thoroughly and caries or periodontitis avoided. Broken teeth usually cost a lot more than simple dental cleaning.

The risks of professional tooth cleaning are very low. So-called powder jet devices only roughen the teeth, but the subsequent polishing smoothes the tooth again. If you take blood-thinning medication, you should tell your dentist before cleaning.

By the way, you do not have to be afraid of pain, because a tooth cleaning is a mechanical cleaning. If you have sensitive teeth, you can still undergo professional tooth cleaning. If you have implants, veneers, crowns or other dentures, you do not have to worry either. Here too, cleaning is carried out with great care so that nothing happens.
