Protect teeth with tooth sealing, information tips

Protect teeth by sealing teeth

Despite very good dental care, bacteria can settle in depressions on the tooth surface and damage the tooth. For this reason, very large depressions and furrows (fissures) represent an increased risk of caries. To prevent these depressions, the dentist can specifically close them using a special procedure, the so-called "fissure sealant". Read all important information about tooth sealing here and find out how you can protect yourself privately against possible costs.

Useful especially for children and teenagers

Strong fissures occur primarily on large occlusal surfaces. A tooth seal is therefore particularly suitable as an additional protective measure for the permanent molars or molars, especially for children whose teeth often have larger fissures and require special protection. The first molars break through in children around the age of 6. The second molars follow at the age of 12. At the appropriate age, it makes sense to carry out a tooth seal for the molars and additionally strengthen the teeth with fluoride. Adequate sealing can reduce the risk of caries at an early age. However, sealing is also possible regardless of age if there are significant fissures that represent an increased risk of caries.

Sealing takes only a few minutes

The procedure for sealing teeth is straightforward and carried out in just a few steps. In the first step, the chewing surfaces and the depressions are thoroughly cleaned by the dentist. The doctor usually uses a powder jet device for this. He then slightly roughened the occlusal surfaces with an acidic gel so that the sealing material could tighten later. The gel is then removed again with water. After drying, the dentist usually fills the cleaned tooth furrows with a white plastic. The plastic is then hardened with a special light. Finally, the doctor checks whether there is still a handicap after biting the teeth in the upper and lower jaw and, if necessary, makes the last corrections.

Cash registers only pay for molars aged 6 to 17 years

Statutory health insurance companies only cover the costs of fissure sealing of the permanent molars for children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 17 years. However, the health insurances do not pay for the sealing of additional teeth and outside this age range. Patients who are interested in securing costs for fissure treatment can also take out private insurance. Very good tariffs with a strong service component for dental prophylaxis completely cover the costs for sealing and also reimburse costs for additional measures such as fluoridation and professional tooth cleaning. Our online comparison gives you the opportunity to transparently compare the various private dental insurance policies in the area of dental prophylaxis and other service areas and to conclude a suitable tariff.
