Rainforest in kindergarten, oroverde

Experience the world, develop a first understanding of global relationships, natural circulatory processes and the importance of protecting biodiversity – these were the resolutions for the kindergarten project “The world begins behind the plate”. The project title was at the same time an invitation to also address the issues outside the immediate environment. Where does the cocoa on the breakfast table come from? What is paper made from? What does the word diversity actually mean? The pilot project brought education for sustainable development and the value of biodiversity into early childhood education: child-friendly, playful and easy.

Children experience their world full of miracles in their own way: playful, colorful and sometimes enchanted. The tropical rainforest with all its rare inhabitants has a lot to offer. This is where the environmental education project comes in and kidnapped the little ones in a fascinating one world. The project topics included everyday products such as paper, cocoa and chocolate, but also the large area of ​​biological diversity:

  • Indigenous cultures
  • Species-rich flora and fauna (illustrated by a visit to the botanical garden or the zoo)
  • Different habitats (native forest and tropical rainforest)
  • Different cycles of nature (nutrient, water and food cycle, the principle of global warming, recycling processes, seasons …)

Through playful repetitions, the children internalize the principle of sustainability and develop an awareness of the protection of biodiversity.

As part of the environmental education project "The world begins outside the box" were the Topics cocoa and chocolate, paper and biodiversity prepared with all its miracles for children in early childhood education. For this purpose, the project team developed diagrams, picture cards with rainforest inhabitants, games and many more Additional materials for free download. The materials were tested in the frame out of three Practice projects in kindergartens in Bonn. The material package is aimed primarily at educators in kindergartens and daycare centers, but also at other early childhood educational institutions.
