Re-registering your car – this is how it works

Every move means stress and several official procedures. Do not forget to change the registration of your vehicle! However, it is important to distinguish whether you are moving within a municipality or changing districts.

If you move within your registration district, you will have far less trouble than if you move to a new city. We explain to you clearly which documents you need and what you have to pay attention to when you re-register in both cases.

If you move within a registration district, you only need to have the change of address noted in the registration certificate part I (former vehicle registration document). That’s all you need to do for this change of vehicle registration.

Do you have to go to the registration office to re-register your vehicle without changing districts??

In most cities, you can make the change of address entry both at the vehicle registration office and at the respective citizen’s offices. It is best to have the required documents (see below) with you when you register your new place of residence at the citizens’ registration office.

  • Registration certificate part I (in the case of older vehicles, the vehicle registration document) of the registered vehicle with valid main inspection entry (d.H. Valid TuV)

What are the costs for the re-registration of a vehicle without a circle change??

The costs for changing the address in the vehicle documents vary depending on the citizens’ registration office and the vehicle registration office. In general, please expect a amount from ca. 12 euro. Keep in mind that not every government agency allows payment by EC card.

Since 1. January 2015 the license plate transfer is valid – if you move within germany, you can keep your old license plate. of course, you can also purchase license plates with the new district abbreviation.

No matter which option you choose, a visit to the registration office is necessary in any case for the change of address in the vehicle documents. You want to start in your new place of residence with the suitable regional sign be on the road or take the chance to get a license plate of your choice? This is of course still possible!

Until the end of 2014, re-registration with a change of license plate was common practice in Germany: moving to a different registration district also meant a new vehicle license plate. Since 2015, you have been free to choose whether to purchase a new license plate or continue to use your old license plate combination.

In the event of a change, you must submit the following documents to the registration office:

  • registration certificate part I and part II (resp. vehicle registration document and vehicle title)
  • Electronic confirmation of insurance (evb number)
  • New license plates
  • Valid report of the last main inspection (if required) for the collection of the vehicle tax
  • identity card or passport with registration certificate of the vehicle owner (with new address)
  • In the case of companies, additional business registration and excerpt from the commercial register, if entered in the commercial register
  • For associations: extract from the register of associations
  • If the application is made by an authorized representative: written power of attorney from the vehicle owner and identity card or passport with certificate of registration from the authorized representative

The fees for vehicle re-registration vary depending on the registration office. Mostly 20 to 30 euro. If you have reserve a desired license plate in advance, there is an additional fee of 12.80 euro that you have to pay for the re-registration. In addition, the cost of your new license plates will be between 20 and 40 euros.

You definitely keep your license plate? Here’s how to do it!

The nationwide license plate transfer makes it possible – you can keep your previous license plate even after moving to another district. Also costs are slightly lower, as you will only be charged for the change of address in the vehicle documents.

In case of a re-registration without changing license plates you must present the following documents at the vehicle registration office:

  • registration certificate part I
  • identity card or passport with registration certificate of the vehicle owner (with new address)
  • If the application is made by an authorized representative, a written power of attorney from the vehicle owner and an identity card or passport with a certificate of registration from the authorized representative

Some registration offices also require the following documents:

  • electronic insurance confirmation (evb-number) for the collection of the vehicle tax (necessary in any case if your account details change)

Is there a deadline for the vehicle registration change??

For the re-registration of your vehicle there is no uniform deadline. However, you should do the re-registration as early as possible. preferably within two weeks after you move in.

Ideally, arrange a appointment at the registration office, so that you do not have to wait unnecessarily when visiting the authorities. At more and more registration authorities, making an appointment in advance is now even obligatory.

Tip: make sure you make an appointment as early as possible, as there can be waiting times of several weeks – sometimes even several months.
