It is not so easy to read a vehicle registration document. Nevertheless, as a motor vehicle owner you should be familiar with this information. Finally, here you will find all relevant information about your car. We will now explain to you what you have to take into account.

Reading the vehicle registration document: what information is there?

On 1. october 2005 the vehicle registration document was replaced by the registration certificate part 1. This is a green, folded card.

  • In addition to the license plate number and the vehicle owner, you will find a lot of information on the vehicle registration document. On the back side the main inspection (TuV) is noted.
  • Also on the back side you can see the legend of each field. If the text is too small for you, you can simply read the explanations in the next paragraph. ? Here you can find out what to expect.

Many of the specifications are completely uninteresting for the layman. In order to be able to read the information clearly, you will find the respective explanations line by line here.

  • B = date of first registration, 2.1 = code to 2, 2.2 = code to D.2 with test number
  • J = vehicle class, 4 = body type
  • E = vehicle identification number, 3 = vehicle identification number check digit
  • D.1 = brand
  • D.2 = type/variant/version
  • D.3 = commercial designation
  • 2 = manufacturer short name
  • 5 = designation of vehicle class and bodywork
  • V.9 = emission class relevant for EC type approval
  • 14 = designation of national emission class
  • P.3 = fuel type or energy source
  • 10 = code to P.3, 14.1 = code to V.9 or 14, P.1 = engine capacity in cm³
  • 22 = remarks and exceptions

Reading the vehicle registration document correctly: the right page

This is the information on the right side of the vehicle registration certificate:

  • L = number of axles, 9 = number of driving axles, P.2/P.4 = nominal power in kW/ nominal speed at min−1, T = maximum speed in km/h
  • 18 = length in mm, 19 = width in mm without mirrors and attachments
  • 20 = height in mm, G = mass of the vehicle in service in kg unladen mass
  • 12 = volume of the tank of a tank truck in m³, 13 = support load in kg, Q = power-to-weight ratio in kW/kg for motorcycles only
  • V.7 = CO2 in g/km combined value, F.1 = technically permissible maximum laden mass in kg, F.2 = total permissible mass in kg in the member state of registration
  • 7.1 = axle load axle 1 in kg, 7.2 = axle load axle 2 in kg, 7.3 = axle load 3 in kg
  • 8.1 = axle load axle 1 in kg, 8.2 = axle load of axle 2 in kg, 8.3 = axle load – axle 3 in kg
  • U.1 = stationary noise in db A, U.2 = speed in min−1 to U.1, U.3 = driving noise in db A
  • O.1 = techn. Zul. Towing capacity braked in kg, O.2 = techn. Permissible. Towing capacity unbraked in kg, S.1 = seats incl. Driver’s seat, S.2 = standing room
  • 15.1 = tires – axle 1
  • 15.2 = tires – axle 2
  • 15.3 = tires – axle 3
  • R = color of the vehicle
  • K = number of the EC type-approval or ABE
  • 6 = date to K, 17 = feature for operating permit, 16 = number of registration certificate part II
  • 21 = other notes
