“Ready for dialogue and interested in peace”

Pope Francis, on his return flight from his visit to Abu Dhabi, attested to the United Arab Emirates' "good will in initiating peace processes" for Yemen.

During his three-day stay, he encountered an Islam that was willing to engage in dialogue and interested in peace, he told journalists traveling with him before arriving in Rome on Tuesday. Referring to his planned March trip to Morocco, also a Muslim-majority country, the pope stressed he had already planned to arrive for the signing of the UN migration pact. This was not possible for reasons of protocol, so the trip was postponed.

With regard to the institutional crisis in Venezuela, Francis stressed at the "flying press conference" that the Holy See is ready to ame the role of mediator if both sides so desire. He had not yet read the letter on the subject from the country's ruler, Nicolas Maduro, of which he became aware at the beginning of his trip to Abu Dhabi on Sunday. "Now I'm going to look at the letter and see what can be done."

Venezuela: call from both parties to conflict needed for mediation

The mediation attempt for Venezuela, in which the Holy See participated under the leadership of former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis RodrIguez Zapatero, had produced "a mouse, smoke, nothing". Against the background of this experience, the Pope emphasized the need for both parties to the conflict to call for mediation. Critics had accused the Vatican of allowing itself to be instrumentalized by Maduro with the first mediation initiative.

With regard to the sexual abuse of women religious in the Church, Francis admitted the phenomenon continues to exist, although he is working to combat it. Already the now emeritus Pope Benedict XVI. had tried in vain, in his days as cardinal, to take action against a religious organization within which there had been sexual abuse and economic abuses. As pope, he pulled out the relevant file and acted, Francis said.
