Receive child benefit during the au pair stay

The world through children’s eyes

After graduation into the big wide world – some school leavers dream of it. Predominantly girls therefore apply for an au pair job abroad. Traveling, discovering cultural differences, gathering life experiences and testing his language skills in practice makes the entire Au-Pair package interesting. For parents at home, the question is whether they can continue to receive child benefit.

From July 1st, 2019, the child benefit for the first child will be 204 euros per month, meaning that the parents will receive 2,448 euros for the following 12 months. There is also more for the third, fourth or fifth child. Close au pair and child benefit not yourself completely off, but the requirements apply note.

In many cases, parents of adult children are still entitled to child benefit up to the age of 25, e.g. B. when the child is studying or undergoing vocational training. In principle, a child’s au pair stay does not entitle them to child benefit. Unless the stay is cleverly combined with systematic language teaching so that it is treated as professional training.

If the au pair in the host country regularly attends language courses with at least ten hours of lessons per week throughout the stay, then the requirements of the BFH case law are fulfilled and the parents can continue to receive child benefit. However, official proof of a language school or university is absolutely necessary. A letter from the host family, private language lessons, courses on the history and culture of the host country or other further training will not be recognized.

It must be clarified whether the host family tolerates the scope of the language courses. The fees for the language course usually have to be paid by the au pair themselves. Sometimes there are grants for this. If the cost of language teaching far exceeds the payment of child benefit, the model does not pay off financially. However, the language skills acquired are always an advantage. There is also intensive advice on child benefit for members at Lohi, which also takes care of the application process and all the formalities.

Lohi (Lohnsteuerhilfe Bayern e.V.), headquartered in Munich, was founded in 1966 as an income tax relief association and is active in around 320 counseling centers nationwide. With over 650,000 members, the association is one of the largest income tax relief associations in Germany. The Lohi shows employees, pensioners and pensioners – within the scope of a membership limited according to § 4 No. 11 StBerG – all possibilities to take advantage of tax advantages.
