Climate change: devastating effects on Senegal

For about China, the USA, India and Russia alone are responsible for half of the global CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. India, for example, is on this list primarily because of its large population. Germany ranks 6th in the ranking of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters (as of 2016) 1) statista: The ten countries with the largest share of CO2 emissions worldwide in 2016; December 2016 2) co2 online: The largest CO2 emitters; last viewed on March 7th, 2019 the CO2 emissions per capita in the USA is 16.49 tons Germany is in 32nd place with a Co2 emission of 8.89 and India’s value is only 1.73. Senegal is ranked 157th with a Co2 emission of 0.61 (as of 2014). When looking at these figures, it becomes clear which side is responsible. 3) factfish: CO2 emissions per capita (metric tons) – for all countries; last accessed on 7.3.2019

Senegal is severely affected by rising sea levels, with negative consequences for fishing and tourism. Some Senegalese blame the temperature rise for the disappearance of the fish and others see the bigger problem in commercial fishing. 5) journafrica: we are all concerned; 10.12.2015 6) DW: Women in Senegal: fight against climate change and migration; 03/07/2019

The soil is also becoming drier and the spreading desert creates poor conditions for agriculture. Many coastal residents lose their source of income. Fishing, which serves not only as a source of income but also as a source of food, is severely restricted. The floor is so dry, that only carrots or onions can be grown in many villages. The backward often have to be supported by initiatives. For example, the Collective of Women for the Fight Against Illegal Migration in Senegal is an initiative that supports women with microcredit and training, whose relatives have left the country to be more independent of men’s payments.

According to researchers from the University of Columbia, major migratory movements will continue if the climate target of the Paris Agreement and thus the 1.5 degree limit is exceeded. Because the livelihood of many people threatens to break away, as is the case in Senegal. 8) DW: Women in Senegal: fight against climate change and migration; 03/07/2019

In order to counteract climate change, renewable energies are still used in Senegal. Solar energy in particular is a positive possibility for the Senegalese. Wind energy must also be weighed up by the constant and regular winds. 9) DW: Africa’s fight against climate change; Last accessed on March 7, 2019 10) The Agility Effect: 75,000 solar modules for Senegal; 13.3.2017 11) journafrica: We are all affected; 10/12/2015

At the same time, there are two questions that arise: The first is the cost. But if renewable energies are promoted enough in Senegal, it is above all the second question that arises. Namely, whether Senegal or other African countries by relying on renewable energies, for real can make as big a difference as other nations. 12) journafrica: We are all concerned; 10/12/2015

It is important not to forget which countries are the ones that raise greenhouse gases: those that do not rely on renewable energies and environmentally friendly solutions, thereby increasing the suffering and loss of sources of income.

Senegal is an example of a country that suffers from excessive fishing off its coast. But it is also a country that sees itself threatened by less direct influences, such as climate change.
