Above the Rhine – Rheinfels Castle

The most powerful landmark of St. Goar is Rheinfels Castle. It is the largest and most beautiful castle ruins on the Rhine – also important for the castle architecture of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in the 14th century as well as for the castle and fortress construction of the 16th to 18th century Landgrave of Hesse- kassel.

Immerse yourself in the Middle Ages, explore fortifications, towering towers and halls and passageways cut into the rock. The importance of the fortress in military as well as cultural area is in the museum of local history in the former chapel tract. Join the guided tours of the fortress or experience the Medieval Castle and Hansen Festival, at authentic spectacles of knights’ games, bow and crossbow shooting, sword fighting and other attractions!

Each visitor to the castle gets a castle at the cash desk and can thus explore parts of the castle at its own discretion and interest. During the season the tours will be open on the same day.
Please think of flashlights for exploring the darker areas of the ruin (as part of a guided tour). Dogs on a leash are welcome.

  • Castle tours are offered for groups of 10 or more.
  • Special tours on fixed dates
  • Themed tours for groups of 10 or more people

Starting in 2017, Burg Rheinfels wants to begin necessary and expensive refurbishment measures. As a result, large parts of the plant – like the mine tunnels – are no longer individual, but only with guidance to commit. The castle remains open and offers a wide range of programs for young and old. We ask for your understanding and look forward to your visit!
