Roadtrip: Canada

A network of over 1.4 million kilometers of roads runs through wild landscapes with vast forests, snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes as well as exciting cities and historic cultural sites. With a rental car in Canada, vacationers have the maximum freedom to build their own individual travel mix from the many assets of the country. As the enormous distances here are bridged by your own car, the infrastructure is optimally tailored to self-drive and the next comfortable accommodation is never far away.

The most popular routes: From the continental crossing to Scenic Drive

The ultimate adventure is certainly the Trans-Canada Highway between St. John’s in Newfoundland and Victoria in British Columbia. On one of the longest roads in the world, freedom-lovers and seekers travel 8000 kilometers from the Atlantic to the Pacific through all 10 provinces – always following the green sign with the white maple leaf. Those who enjoy this mammoth tour and do not just want to tear off miles should, however, have at least 3 weeks in their luggage. With a smaller time budget, it is more profitable to focus on a region of almost 10 million square kilometers.

In eastern Canada, for example, on Route 138 through Québec, nature and culture combine beautifully – including centuries-old pioneer villages, Indian territories and whale watching. If you want to travel further back in time, you can hit the Viking Trail along the windswept coast of Newfoundland to the world-famous Viking settlement of L’Anse-aux-Meadows. A round trip on the 300-kilometer Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia is also an unforgettable experience: the scenic road winds its way through dramatic dramatic cliffs above the roaring Atlantic in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and is considered one of the most beautiful routes in North America.

The magazine Reader’s Digest, however, has chosen to travel the Pacific Rim Highway in the wild west of Canada for the best Canadian road trip: the tour takes the ferry from Vancouver via Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo and then almost 300 kilometers past peaks, lakes and redwoods into the surfer mecca Tofino. Vancouver is also a good starting point for a mini road trip on the Sea-to-Sky Highway: The short trip to the famous ski resort of Whistler can be completed in just under 2 hours – but there are plenty of breathtaking viewpoints to stop you on the way. Mountain lovers can also extend this tour to Calgary, which is about 700 kilometers away, and incorporate the Canadian Rockies with highlights such as Jasper National Park, Banff National Park and Lake Louise.

What should be considered??

Anyone wishing to rent a car from Avis Car Rental in Canada must be at least 21 years old and have a standard credit card. The German driver’s license is recognized in all provinces. With a stay of more than 6 months, however, it makes sense to bring along an international driver‘s license, as otherwise the German driver’s license must be exchanged for a Canadian one on the spot. Fortunately, the traffic rules in Canada are not too different from continental European habits. There is right-hand traffic and, unlike in the US, road signs even contain miles instead of miles. However, special caution is required for Europeans at Canadian junctions: the traffic lights are only on the opposite side. At junctions with a 4-way stop sign, the right of way is not awarded according to the usual “right to left” principle, but according to the principle “first come, first drive.” In order not to burden the travel fund with sensitive fines, car travelers should turn on the daytime running lights, never overtake a holding school bus and avoid phone calls or alcohol at the wheel as much as possible. Also for Raser a road trip through Canada is not the right thing, because even on lonely highways is a speed limit of depending on the province 100 or 110 km / h. Never mind: you will have more leisure to enjoy the spectacular views.
