Why runny nose is particularly bad for babies

Babies and toddlers are particularly susceptible to runny nose because their immune system is still "in the development phase". A cold is much more unpleasant for the little ones than for an adult. Because infants mainly breathe through the nose in the first months of life and only gradually develop the ability to breathe efficiently through the mouth.

Due to the still very narrow nasal passages, a slight swelling of the nasal mucous membranes is enough to prevent nasal breathing. Babies may experience drinking problems with restricted nasal breathing. Moisturizing nasal drops can help, especially at night, so that your baby can breathe better and sleep more peacefully. Here more on the topic of help with acute runny nose.

How to help your baby get a cold:

Healthy indoor climate

A baby with a cold and runny nose needs rest. This also includes the right environment. The room should be warm, but not overheated. Temperatures of around 18 ° C are pleasant for most children.

Regular ventilation and moistening of the room air are important so that the little patient’s mucous membranes do not dry out. Wet towels on the heater or a bucket of water near the radiator do a good job here. To prevent your baby’s head from cooling down, you can cover it with a thin cotton or silk hat. A daily walk in the fresh air is also good for you.

Drink enough

In the first months of life, babies are well cared for by breastfeeding. From the 4th month you need about 500 ml of liquid per day, from the first year of life about 1 liter. With colds and colds, however, the fluid requirement is increased. It is best to offer lukewarm water or unsweetened herbal teas made from rose hip, fennel, hibiscus or linden flowers.

Caring for sore runny noses

If the nose runs constantly, sore skin usually does not fail. The red, rough spots around the nose hurt with every touch and even inflammation can form. The delicate baby skin now needs special care so that it is adequately moisturized and quickly calms down again. The Penaten baby cream has been tried and tested for generations and is tailored to the needs of sensitive baby skin.

Special care is also required inside the nose. You can find help for acute colds here.

Lay your upper body up

It will make it easier for your baby to breathe if the upper body is slightly elevated. To do this, simply slide a thin pillow or a folded towel under the head of the mattress. Never put a pillow on the mattress – it could take your baby’s breath away.

Help with acute runny nose

Moisturizing nasal drops for babies such as Olynth® Salin can help with a stuffy nose. The salt-based solution moisturizes and nourishes the nose. In addition, if the nose is blocked, the viscous secretion is liquefied and can drain away better, cleaning the nose is made easier. This is especially important for babies. Olynth® Salin is already suitable for infants, well tolerated and available in spray and drop format.

Important: Do not give adult medication!

Do not give your baby medication, such as pain relievers, antipyretic, regular decongestants or cough medicine, that are not specifically approved for infants without first asking your pediatrician.

Be careful with essential oils!

Babies react differently to essential oils than adults or larger children. Camphor and menthol are unsuitable for babies and toddlers and can even cause cramps in the larynx muscles. Always get expert advice before using essential oils!

When does my baby have to go to the doctor?

Even if a cold is usually harmless and subsides after a few days, there are situations in which you should definitely see a doctor with your baby:

  • Fever (above 38.5 ° C)
  • Persistent refusal to drink, tiredness or weakness
  • Breathing problems, persistent cough
  • Suspected ear pain (evidence of frequent touching of the pinna by hand)

Basically: Even if none of the symptoms apply to your baby, you should see a pediatrician if you are unsure and concerned about treatment!
