Sand Art – Blooming Baroque Ludwigsburg – Garden Show, Fairy Tale Garden

Sand Art from 6.07. to 29.08.2019

“Once upon a time” … a BlüBa summer fairy tale! At the spectacular sand art exhibition this time – fitting to the big anniversary – everything revolves around the special magic of fairy tales. Which classics will be staged by the international sand artists? Will the unusual material become the stuff of fairytale dreams? Visitors to the BlüBa can experience live how the impressive works of art, each consisting of 30 tons of sand and more, slowly take shape.

With the start of the exhibition on 6 July, 11 sculptures will already be on display. In the further course of the sand art 3 large sculptures will be completed under the eyes of the visitors – a unique experience. Numerous participation actions for young and old, where you can become active yourself with sand, invite you to be there on the weekends. With feet in the sand, sunbeams in the face and magnificent sand sculptures in view, the castle garden invites you to relax with snacks and refreshing drinks in the “Summer in the City” feeling.

Why do the sand sculptures last so long?

Many have already built a sandcastle on the beach. With wet sand it is quite easy – but as soon as the sand was dry, there was a danger of collapse. But why do the sand artists’ sculptures last so long?

The sand artists, also called carvers, do not use the normal sand of the sandy beach, because it is very old and washed by the tides already round. It is as good for building as if you were trying to stack tennis balls. The sand the carver uses must be square and sharp-edged.

Of course the sand sculptures of the professionals are also bigger than normal sand castles that you build on holiday. But you also have to consider that 30 tons of sand and more are used for one figure. But before the carvers can get started, the sand is compacted layer by layer. And this takes quite a while, because only small quantities can be compacted, i.e. a layer about 30 cm thick, because it is very important that the sand is very compact afterwards. During compaction, the angular, sharp-edged grains of sand interlock perfectly and “hold each other”.

The carving of the sand sculptures then always takes place from top to bottom. It is important that there is a “loose” layer of sand at the bottom, so that any rain can easily drain off and seep through.

Some carvers then spray the figures with a protein-containing liquid that wraps itself around the sand sculpture like a wafer-thin skin, but is still biodegradable. This invisible skin provides temporary additional protection against heavy rain, making sand sculptures extremely durable.
