Sedation instead of general anesthesia

Dental treatment in deep sleep without fear of pain

Who would not want that ? A dental treatment that you don’t notice, and that you sort of follow the entire procedure "oversleep". In modern dentistry this is possible today in order to achieve the greatest possible success in treatment of extensive tooth restorations, surgical interventions or in special cases of the treatment of anxiety patients.

In classic dental treatment, narcotics are used to eliminate pain, which have a local effect on the area to be treated in the pharynx. But the administration of the anesthetic through an injection already causes discomfort in many patients. In addition, local anesthesia may not be sufficient or not effective enough in some treatment cases. In these cases, additional sedation using nitrous oxide or a sedative such as Midazolam / Dormicum may be useful.

In the Zimny dental practice in Berlin, we will be happy to advise you comprehensively on the possibilities of dental treatment in deep sleep in our practice.

How does deep sleep sedation with Midazolam / Dormicum work and how does the patient feel ?

Midazolam / Dormicum is a sedative that has a calming, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effect on the patient. When administered intravenously, the agent takes effect within 10-20 seconds. The patient is then in a state of complete relaxation in a twilight state, but is open to treatment under general anesthesia and breathes independently. During treatment, unwanted anxiety reactions are reduced, so that stress-free treatment is possible. In addition, narcotics can be given to eliminate pain.

As a rule, patients feel very relaxed after a treatment in deep sleep and sometimes they can no longer remember the dental treatment. In individual cases, the treatment of anxiety patients can even lead to a weakening of symptoms, which will also have a positive effect on future treatments without the use of sedatives.

During treatment with Midazolam / Dormicum, the patient is monitored for cardiovascular functions throughout the sedation and over a period of 2 hours after waking up by trained specialists from the dental practice. The treatment may only be carried out by specially trained dentists.
After 2 hours, the patient is discharged home accompanied by an assistant. The effects of the anesthetic usually disappear after 12 hours at the latest.

For whom is dental treatment in deep sleep useful? ?

The treatment at the dentist is not only uncomfortable for many patients but even unbearable. There can be a variety of reasons for this, and each one of them can lead to the fact that an ordinary nervousness turns into a panic fear of pain and the associated dental treatment. Dental fear is a widespread phenomenon and, according to experts, affects around five million people in Germany.

Treatment under such conditions is often very difficult or even impossible for the dentist. Planned procedures sometimes have to be shortened or even canceled and the fear of the next treatment increases with the patient from appointment to appointment.

But medically indicated reasons such as patients with an abnormal gag reflex, people with mental or physical disabilities and with long surgical interventions can also be advised to sedate with Midazolam / Dormicum.

When is sedation with Midazolam / Dormicum better than general anesthesia?

In general, it can hardly be said, because before treatment with Midazolam / Dormicum there is always a complete medical history of the patient and an extensive examination. We can always recommend a treatment in deep sleep if the patient should remain responsive during the treatment, e.g. for a root resection, or for longer dental treatments such as e.g. for surgical treatment using dental implants.

Who pays for sedation with Midazolam / Dormicum ?

Dental treatment in deep sleep is usually not covered by health insurance. In individual cases, a medical indication can lead to reimbursement of the costs. This has to be clarified in individual cases. Please contact us about this and inquire with your health insurance company.

Side effects can occur during sedation with Midazolam / Dormicum ?

Treatment with a sedative must be dosed precisely based on the patient’s preliminary examination and the vital functions must be monitored by trained personnel throughout the sedation. Both Dr. Burghardt Zimny as well as the specialists of the dental practice are specially trained to use this treatment method and trained for emergency measures.

About the risks and possible side effects e.g. Through allergic reactions or other risk factors that apply to your personal case, we will inform you comprehensively as part of the preliminary examination of a possible treatment with Midazolam / Dormicum..
