Setting up a small children’s room – 7 tips that will make it happen! What leo loves

– Category: Mini Interior.

I am asked again and again: How can I furnish a small children’s room really nicely? So that the space is used optimally, but it doesn’t look crowded or cramped overall? But still keep all important elements and areas in their place? And there is a beautiful, harmonious room in which the child and parents can feel comfortable?

If you also have a small or rather small children’s room and want it to be really beautiful and tasteful, I have seven tips for you today that will help you with this.

1. Define processes and functions within your child’s room

You are probably like a lot of mothers – you are a little bit enraptured by the large selection of beautiful things and also by the possibilities of how to design a children’s room. In the meantime, it is even possible to turn the children’s room into a small indoor playground without having to break with the modern, minimalist, beautiful style: wall bars, gymnastics rings, swings, slides, seesaws, ball pit – all of this is in high quality, modern and stylish. And an active zone is just one of many design aspects …

Of course, given these and many other possibilities, it is difficult to limit yourself to certain, selected options. But unfortunately it is really essential. This is particularly true in a small children’s room.

The answer is determined by the processes and things that should take place in the nursery. This does not necessarily have to include everything from changing and dressing to sleeping. Because the changing table may find space in the bathroom, a wardrobe can be accommodated in the adjacent hallway and there would be significantly more space for an adventure climbing area or something else you dream of …

My unconditional recommendation is therefore to think about the processes and preferences within your family and to think about what should take place where. For many families who have a rather small children’s room, but for example a large, open dining room, the establishment of a play area in the parents’ area is a good option. Especially since the large selection of beautiful boxes and baskets results in very decorative storage space that also looks nice and tidy in the living room.

What cannot be outsourced must then take place in the children’s room itself. These important functions and needs should be given priority over “nice to have” aspects such as a large cozy corner or an adventure area.

The more precisely you know what absolutely needs to find space, the more successful the project will be to successfully set up a small children’s room!

2. Choose the right furniture

A very important point, where one thing is particularly important in a small room: less is more! A small room can only look harmonious and beautiful if, despite the limited space available, it still has small free spaces, not every corner of the room is furnished or decorated. This applies to both the floor area and the wall design.

When choosing furniture, you should make sure to choose minimalist, simple furniture in light colors. Also make sure that the furniture is connected. You can do this by matching design, style and color. Be careful with classic children’s room series: having a bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers from the same series can be a good choice, but it is usually rare. Because it quickly looks like the furniture catalog. Individuality is missing.

It is better to put together your own combination that harmonizes with each other. Of course there can be a “statement piece” like an antique chest of drawers or a colored element. Ideally, this piece is then "caught" in the second place in the room by appropriate decoration or a small accessory in a similar style or color..

Basically, I recommend smaller, subtle furniture in the children’s room. In a small room, however, it can be an option to furnish upwards instead of downwards. So instead of a rather bulky wardrobe, which also sprawls in depth, it is better to place it on a particularly “slim” shelf or cupboard, which then rises in height. By the way, with the Stuva series from Ikea this works pretty well *. Stacked up, it looks really pretty due to the childish, simple shape, especially in rooms with high ceilings. Of course, something like this has to be mounted on the wall with care and child safety.

In addition, a loft bed is also an opportunity to create space – but this is a topic in itself (especially in small rooms), about which you can find detailed information in my article Loft bed with slide.

3. Use bright wall colors

In small rooms, bright colors are almost always the right choice. Dark tones make the room appear smaller. Large areas should preferably be designed in light, neutral tones such as white, off-white, nude or light gray. Bold colors should only be used accentuated.

Such tones are ideally worked into the room using interchangeable accessories. You should also be aware that toys and books bring color to the children’s room anyway …

The picture below shows a nice compromise solution if you would like to use a stronger color … Instead of a completely painted wall in a contrasting color, it was limited to the lower third of the wall. So that it looks harmonious overall, the canopy picks up this color again, which sort for a color balance. Therefore my tip is to compensate for such color contrast with suitable accessories.

4. Provide multiple light sources

A lot of natural light plays a big role in all living spaces. Especially in a small children’s room. Because the more sunlight falls into a room, the bigger it looks. If no glare or privacy protection is required, curtains or blinds should be attached so that they do not take out additional light during the day. Therefore, large furniture should not be placed near the window. Long shadows and less daylight would result.

For reasons of coziness, I also recommend creating several light sources that go beyond a ceiling lamp for particularly bright rooms. Some experts advise using five different types of lighting. I also often implement this in my nursery advice. But of course three are also a good middle ground.

So I would definitely recommend a floor or wall lamp in addition to daylight and ceiling light – if only because they are available in the most wonderful motifs, colors and variants and they are therefore often simply beautiful. * Other options are a cottonball light chain as below on the next picture or a night or reading light *.
Here, too, the selection is large and the decision is of course not that easy …

5. Develop a harmonious overall concept

The "secret" of a successful children’s room is to combine the individual elements of the interior with one another in such a way that a harmonious room is created. The key to a beautiful children’s room is the composition. This is especially true in a small or rather small children’s room.

So think very carefully:

  • What colors should appear in the children’s room?
  • Which color should dominate?
  • What topics and motifs should appear in the children’s room?
  • Do the furniture match in color, style and material? (see also point 2 above)
  • How can these be optimally reconciled with each other??
  • Is there furniture, color or elements that stand out and how does it work? In this context, dark colors, for example, should at least be picked up at least elsewhere in the room in order to achieve a harmonious overall impression.

Write down the colors and motifs you have selected and use them to compile your shopping list. Only what corresponds to your concept can move into the shopping cart and later into your children’s room.

My tip also: buy little by little. And keep checking how the room affects you during the furnishing process. And whether there is room for further details or whether it is gradually becoming too much. Be a little patient here, it’s worth it!

6. Bet on flexible game elements and accessories

I said it above at point 1 – with a small amount of space, it is important to concentrate on the important functions and areas and to ensure that they find a place in your children’s room.

Nevertheless, you do not necessarily have to do without nice “nice-to-have” elements – such as a cozy, decorative cozy corner, an active zone or the like! If you plan these things well and integrate them optimally into the room.

Here are some ideas:

  • Instead of a teepee or playhouse, you can use a canopy as a "tent" *. They are cozy, decorative, they come in many colors and the best thing is: they are flexible and take – if you e.g. tie up or tie up – no Space away. You also have the option of placing them above or right next to the bed so that the bed can become a cozy corner during the day.
  • The combination of bed and cozy corner is a pretty good overall >7. Keep order and sort out regularly

Especially if your children’s room does not have enough space for a large wardrobe and you therefore have to store your child’s entire wardrobe in a small storage space, it is recommended that you only store clothes that really fit your child and that correspond to the season. The smaller the child, the more often you should carefully muck out the wardrobe and sort out clothes that have become too small.

The same applies, of course, to toys: only what is stored is defect-free and age-appropriate. And if there are still large amounts of toys in the cupboards, a simple "rotation principle" helps. Toys are stored in turn elsewhere for a while and therefore out of the child’s reach. This way you create space and at the same time ensure that your child plays with things more intensively when they reappear from the sinking.

You see – if you become clear above all about your desired elements and basic needs and then implement as many of the design tips mentioned here as possible, your children’s room will not only be beautiful, but also a real feel-good room, in which you can share a lot Have joy.
