The selection of ski areas in Austria is of course huge. We have been traveling a lot in Austria in recent years and have tested different ski areas. We discovered very small ski areas where children and beginners can practice their first turns. You don’t need large and expensive lifts.

For example the small ski area Weißbriach in Carinthia. We spent the vacation in the beautiful JUFA Hotel Gitschtal. It’s right next to the slopes. The ski tickets are also free! The JUFA Hotel has beautiful family rooms, a small petting zoo and even its own children’s workshop. To relax after a nice winter day, you can warm up in the sauna.

In the medium-sized ski areas, beginners as well as advanced skiers get their money’s worth and often at very good family prices. We were impressed by the small ski area on Lake Weissensee. There was something for each of us there. Beautiful sunny beginners’ slopes and fast descents for our big ones. We were also able to toboggan and above all ice skate on the Weissensee: a very special experience. We were even on the frozen lake on a fat bike. Really cool!

The large ski swings offer you fun on the slopes on many runs and kilometers of slopes. Of course, you have to decide for yourself whether you need and want the large offer. Which federal state in Austria is best suited for winter holidays?

There are offers for winter family vacations in practically every state in Austria. Most of the recommended options with children can be found on a skiing holiday in Salzburg, a skiing holiday in Carinthia, a skiing holiday in Styria or a skiing holiday in Tyrol. Here you can easily find the high mountains with their numerous ski areas. The state of Vorarlberg is small, but the offers for skiing holidays in Vorarlberg are recommended. The two federal states of Lower Austria and Upper Austria can also score points with ski holidays in Upper Austria and ski holidays in Lower Austria. There are not so many offers here, but also niches where it is worth going.

Family hotels and apartments in Austria

There is also a large selection of accommodations for your skiing holiday with children in Austria: From professional family hotels that have been specially adapted to the needs of families, with ski courses and childcare, to simple guest houses.

In the children’s hotels you will find most beautiful family rooms, an all-inclusive offer for food and drinks, child care and often ski courses in winter. In addition, indoor pools and saunas are available to relax after a day of skiing. We particularly liked the Rosenhof in the Kleinwalsertal. Although the valley belongs to Austria, you can reach it via Oberstaufen in the Allgäu. The Family Hotel Post on Lake Millstatt is also very pleasant and family-friendly.

Apartments with different sizes and features are also very popular with families. Particularly popular: a chalet in an alpine village. For example, the hut village Almlust near Salzburg is great. It is right next to the large ski area in Flachau.

Inexpensive ski vacation with children Austria

Our tip: If you want to go on a cheap family ski vacation, you should rather choose the unknown or smaller holiday regions. The big destinations are not affordable for the normal budget in the winter holiday season. In addition, you should put your demands in relation to the holiday budget. A request for a "cheap family vacation" in a luxury family hotel is of course contradicting itself. You can get nice, relatively inexpensive offers at JUFA Hotels, for example. Here, the ski tickets are often included in the winter offer.
