South Africa with children: Tips for a Safari with Grandchildren

Seeing elephants, giraffes and lions in the great outdoors is a unique experience. How much more intense will this experience be if you can do it with children in South Africa – and see the (animal) world through the eyes of the children.

Especially South Africa is made for a safari of grandparents and grandchildren. Many national parks and private game reserves are located in malaria-free areas. Lodges offer child-friendly safaris and activities. The country is easy to reach, there is little or no time difference and the climate, especially around Cape Town, is pleasant all year round.

Africa travel expert Daniela Köster from Genuss Touren has given us some helpful and useful tips for a safari with your grandchildren.

She has travelled to over 60 countries on four continents – but the heart belongs to Africa and the Indian Ocean. Every year she travels there two to three times – to find new accommodations, but also to enjoy the country and its people.

By the way, Daniela Köster inherited her passion for travelling from her grandmother, as she told us some time ago. Read Daniela Köster’s story about her grandmother’s love of travel, which was turned into a profession.

travel time

South Africa is a year-round destination. Our winter months from October to March are particularly popular. It is then summer in South Africa and accordingly summery warm in the whole country. But also the months of the German long summer holidays are very suitable for a trip to South Africa. Here you only have to pay attention to the right region.

  • Whale season in Hermanus between June and October
  • Spring bloom on the west coast from July to September
  • Best safari possibilities in the parks in the north (Kruger, Madikwe, etc.) from June to October
