The winners of the Bio-Fuchs innovation prize were honored at the Bio Austria Farmers’ Day 2019. The winning project is the Stress Free Slaughter project, which eleven Styrian farms started together. The award has been presented for the 11th time and honors particularly innovative ideas from organic farms.

As part of the Bio Austria Farmers’ Day in the Bildungshaus Schloss Puchberg near Wels, the “BIO AUSTRIA-Fuchs” innovation prize for outstanding projects and ideas in organic farming was awarded for the 11th time on January 29, 2019. All organic farmers in Austria were invited to participate. Organic farms from all over Austria have submitted projects. All submissions were assessed by an independent jury based on the criteria of creativity, contribution to increasing animal welfare, and feasibility and benefits for other organic farms. The winning project was finally chosen by means of audience voting. The winning project 2019 comes from Styria, second and third place going to Salzburg.

1st prize: stress-free slaughter

The “stress-free slaughter”, ie the slaughter of the animals in their usual environment, is not regulated by law in Austria because the animals have to be delivered to a slaughterhouse alive. From the point of view of many organic farmers, stress-free slaughter is just as much a part of animal welfare as rearing and fattening the animals. In the meantime, numerous initiatives have required politicians to create an appropriate legal framework so that farmers can make the last section of animal life stress-free and appropriate to the species.

In the district of Deutschlandsberg in western Styria, eleven farmers have become active and have joined together to form the “stressfrei.st” association. Through the LEADER project “Initiative for stress-free slaughter”, they want to provide arguments for a positive decision by politicians to stress-free slaughter. In the course of the project collaboration developed and manufactured a transport box with a mechanical engineering company. It should enable a smooth slaughtering process even on steeper terrain and, due to its low weight, be transportable by car. This project was submitted by Alois Kiegerl from Trahütten in Styria.

2nd Prize: Mother-bound calf rearing with intensive cow-calf contact

The mother-bound calf rearing is the most natural form of calf rearing. It can be implemented in a variety of ways. At the farm of the Bernhofer family from Golling in Salzburg, the calves can suckle with their mothers during the milking period. For this purpose, mother and calf are together in the run. Then the cows are milked in the milking parlor. The cows also have the opportunity to check on their calves outside of the suckling period and can thus live out their mother’s instinct all day long. For this purpose, an easy-to-clean outer box with a run for the calves was set up directly at the cows’ run. The spout size can easily be varied with swiveling panel gates. The outlet is enlarged during the suckling period and then again on the normal calf run area reduced. The cows can look after their calves in the run at any time. The calves always have contact with their mother and at the same time grow up with animals of the same age.

3rd prize: cooling for dairy cows

Johann Endfellner from Seekirchen in Salzburg has found a simple and effective solution to improve the stable climate for his cows on hot summer days. To do this, he installed a simple water sprinkler for the garden above the waiting area in front of the milking parlor. The water sprinkler is switched on one to two hours before milking. The water comes from the nearby natural pond. In this way, the temperature in the waiting area and in the milking parlor can be reduced by a few degrees. The irrigation also reduces fly pollution. This makes the cows quieter, which also makes milking more pleasant.
