Adults also benefit from braces (© av88 – fotolia) Many adults now wear braces for a radiant smile with flawless teeth. In this health tip, the jameda health editorial office explains the options for tooth correction for people beyond the teenage age.

Aesthetic and medical reasons for braces

For aesthetic reasons, adults very often opt for tooth correction using braces. However, teeth and jaw misalignments that lead to health problems can also be remedied with a brace. These include e.g. B. teeth that are too close, which promote caries through poor hygiene options. Missed bites are also treated, which can lead to massive wear of the teeth, gum disease, difficulty swallowing or headache and neck pain. Individual tilted teeth can also be straightened by a clip, in order to then adapt a denture, for example.

While your teeth are being realigned with braces, maintaining dental hygiene is more important than ever. However, the arch wires and braces of the struts make cleaning and flossing possible in the normal way. Instead, you need to learn a few simple techniques for cleaning plaque and food remnants not just from your teeth but from your braces and for flossing as thoroughly as you did before your braces were installed.

Getting it together

It is important to have the right tools for the job. You need to brush your teeth and braces with a soft bristle brush. You can use the same dental floss you are used to using a small device called a silk threader. As an alternative to a threader, it has some dental floss with a less flexible end so that it can be threaded through your arch wires without the need for a threader. Next, a proxy brush will help you clean the brackets even closer to the sides than you are able to achieve with a toothbrush. Finally, a good plaque control rinse will help make the job more complete.

Loose braces

The removable braces / loose braces / loose braces can be used effectively for the treatment of crooked teeth, provided the patient is working very well. It is particularly useful for children during growth, i.e. before all permanent teeth break. But even after growth has ended, some misaligned teeth can still be corrected using removable braces (ideal start of treatment).

Loose braces – manufacture

In order to be able to produce removable braces, an impression of the teeth must first be made. To do this, the patient bites into a soft chewing gum mass (alginate) that hardens in the mouth. The tooth impression is then cast in plaster in the laboratory. The working model emerges. The working model is not identical to the diagnostic model that is measured for planning. The removable braces are individually manufactured on the working model in the dental laboratory.
