Teeth bleaching – In Office – At the dentist – How to go – s

If you would rather have your teeth whitened at the dentist’s instead of the “do-it-yourself procedure” (our recommendation: the 5 best home bleaching sets), you should also consider some circumstances here. For example, different dentists sometimes work with different procedures, because even if there are common standards, it is ultimately up to each dentist and his practice to decide which one to choose. Rarely several procedures are supported, but this is not necessarily profitable for the practice due to the economic efficiency and high acquisition costs of individual necessary devices.

The choice of the method and a comprehensive education

The first step in a desired bleaching in the practice naturally leads to the dentist of your choice. The dentist is already very familiar with the history of the patient and his teeth, so he can usually immediately assess whether bleaching is possible and useful. It is not uncommon for the whiteness of one’s own teeth not to be perceived in the way the dentist interprets it. This is mainly due to unrealistic ideas on the part of patients who want the perfect vener smile from film and television.

The dentist will therefore not only inform the patient about the whitening methods used in the practice, but will also convey realistic expectations to the patient. However, patients tend to have a certain amount of leeway, i.e. they can usually choose from several degrees of whiteness, which one they would like to see as the final result of bleaching. In the case of particularly unrealistic expectations or a lack of suitability, for example if the enamel is too thin, a dentist can also reject the treatment due to medical concerns. Then there is only the way to a dentist, who sometimes maintains a different procedure and a different point of view, or you are satisfied with the natural tooth color.

Every dentist will check the teeth thoroughly beforehand, and professional tooth cleaning is also typically carried out before bleaching. This not only increases the chances of a better result, but also the probability that it will last longer.

By the way, pain patients or dentist muffle have nothing to fear from bleaching. Irrespective of which method is used, it causes neither pain nor discomfort. Patients should of course bring a little time with them so that the dentist can do his work thoroughly, but this treatment cannot be compared with the classic visit to the dentist and the insertion of fillings or the like.

As a rule, the counselling interview takes place as follows

Once the decision has been made in favour of bleaching, the next step is to discuss the further details with the dentist. During the consultation, the dentist will discuss the following circumstances:

Living habits, the type and cause of discolouration and the structure, including the individual, congenital colour of the teeth, are individual aspects that play a key role in this consultation. The dentist takes all these aspects into account when deciding which degree of whiteness is actually realistic and harmless to health. After all, the dentist cannot bleach infinitely often just because an unrealistic degree of whiteness is desired by the patient. He must therefore achieve a balance between a procedure that is harmless to health and the desired aesthetics.

Once the dice have been thrown, two appointments are made: one of these is dedicated to a routine examination followed by professional tooth cleaning. This allows the later result to have a more intensive effect. The routine examination also ensures that there are no holes, tartar or other blemishes that need to be repaired before bleaching – if this is the case, a separate appointment may be arranged. The second appointment is the bleaching itself and the necessary first session.

On the day of the first bleaching: Procedure for treatment

As soon as the practice has been entered, the bleaching patient usually starts immediately. It is helpful if the day is not planned any further, especially if the PZR is still pending. Bleaching is also something that dentists do carefully and not hectically. You can prepare yourself for the following steps, whereby variations between individual dentists and practices are of course conceivable.

Step 1: Dental analysisIn the first step, a precise shade analysis of the anterior teeth is carried out again, together with their shade determination. After a discussion, the further execution of the procedure is explained and the necessary steps for the subsequent bleaching process are taken.

Step 2: Cleaning the teethNow the cleaning is carried out if it has not already taken place the day before. Polishing is usually done with a toothbrush, which removes residues of plaque, coffee, tobacco and tea. Bleaching only makes sense on clean teeth!

Step 3: Gum protectionThis step covers the gums with reliable protection, the cheeks are pushed away from the teeth relatively comfortably by a lip retractor. This ensures that the dentist can work up to the gumline and at the same time has a good view of the teeth and the accessibility of the teeth.

Step 4: Further protective measures if necessaryThe patient is fitted with glasses with a light filter to protect him from the effects of light. This is the case if light or laser are also used for bleaching. In addition, lip protection is usually applied to the lips to protect them from drying out and other superficial injuries.

Step 5: Gel is applied several timesNow the dentist can apply the whitening gel to the teeth and distribute it evenly. This gel is removed and reapplied several times in the course of this procedure. In the meantime, the saliva is sucked off regularly. If necessary, the light of the respective procedure is also used at this point.

Step 6: The checkThe dentist checks again the results achieved with your ideas. Many such bleaching therapies are designed for several sessions, which is why only an intermediate step is achieved in the first session.

Step 7: After-treatmentThe teeth are treated again, and a gel is usually applied to desensitize them, so that the hypersensitivity after bleaching does not occur so intensively. Patients also receive further advice on whether they should not eat, drink or smoke for a short time. Aftercare not only makes bleaching more comfortable, as teeth are less sensitive to pressure, cold and heat, it also has a positive effect on the whitening result itself.

If several meetings are scheduled, a new date for the second meeting is agreed directly in practice. The total number of sessions required always depends on the degree of discoloration, the desired whiteness and the method used. Usually dentists can restrict the necessary sessions very specifically in advance. Usually two to four sessions are required to achieve the desired final result.
