Test: The best supplementary health insurance in comparison

Supplementary health insurance Statutory insurance, private treatment

Treatment by a chief doctor costs extra, some supplementary insurance covers the costs.

Only about one in ten Germans has full private health insurance. The vast majority are legally insured – and must therefore participate in certain benefits provided by their health insurers through additional payments. However, many German citizens want to protect themselves from high costs and have therefore taken out additional health insurance. Demand is increasing: there were more than 25 million such extra policies at the end of last year, more than ever before.

The offer is difficult to understand and not every insurance is necessary or even useful for everyone. "Insured persons should weigh up what would put them in financial distress if they had to pay for certain services out of their own pockets," advises the Stiftung Warentest and warns: "The tariffs often perform much less than they promise."

Many statutory health insurance companies work with private insurers and only offer their members insurance from these companies. But if you want to take out additional insurance, you are not bound by this selection, but can also do your own research and sign with other providers. Experts advise you to always compare several tariffs instead of just getting an offer from your own health insurance company. In many cases, other providers are cheaper than the proposed cooperation partners.

The most popular supplementary insurance policies include policies for inpatient treatment, i.e. accommodation in a single or double room in a hospital and care by a chief doctor or senior physician. In this way, legally insured persons can be treated like private patients. Especially those who want to be treated quickly by their preferred specialist in the event of a serious illness benefit from this. “Patients can hardly pay chief medical fees themselves. With complex treatments, they can amount to several thousand euros, ”warns the Stiftung Warentest.

And Jens Trittmacher, a lawyer at the Federation of Insured Persons (BdV), advises: "If you choose a different hospital than the one mentioned in the doctor’s briefing, make sure that the differential costs are reimbursed." or twin rooms must be insured separately, should be calculated in individual cases. After all, patients can get this special request without insurance if necessary and simply pay out of their own pocket – the price is usually not too high.

The best rates for outpatient services

Outpatient costs can also be insured: for visual aids such as glasses and contact lenses, for example, for naturopathy and treatments by osteopaths and naturopaths, as well as for preventive examinations and vaccinations that are not covered by regular health insurance companies. The fine print then regulates how often such services are used and how expensive they can be. "If you place great value on naturopathic treatments, appropriate insurance policies can make sense," says Philipp Schwiermann, insurance expert at the Consumer Advice Center in North Rhine-Westphalia. "Nevertheless, there are many differences here: What is the maximum reimbursement limit? Can I go to any naturopath or only to doctors with additional naturopath training? "
