If children are traveling in the car, they need a suitable child seat. The ADAC has now examined 20 models. Most are "good", but one in five is "poor" – why? 0 comments

For child seats and baby car seats for the car, parents have a large selection of products that they can safely access. This has resulted in an ADAC test of 20 models. All of them mastered the so-called front impact test.

The child seats and baby car seats were checked in terms of safety, operation, ergonomics and their pollutant content. With 12 models, a total of more than half scores “good”. 4 products were rated "poor" due to too many pollutants. Another 4 received the grade "satisfactory".

The largest group of models tested were seats for children up to the age of approximately 1.5 years. The best The “Swandoo Albert + i-Size Base” was rated here for 450 euros (grade 1.6). The cheapest model with “good” (2.0) is the “Jané Koos i-Size R1” for 210 euros.

Pollutants suspected of cancer in some ways

But a third of the models for children up to about 1.5 years also failed in the test: four models from two manufacturers were given a "poor" rating due to an excessive pollutant content. It is about the flame retardant TCPP and the naphthalene suspected of cancer, which were found in the upholstery fabrics. According to ADAC, the limit values were above the values applicable to toys.

In the models for children up to around 4 years of age, the "Joie i-Spin 360 *" scored "good" (1.8) for EUR 350.

Try out the seat in the car with the child

The child seat requirement applies to children up to a height of 150 centimeters or up to the age of 12. Parents should take both their car and their offspring with them to purchase. This is the best way to try out the relevant models. Because the correct installation and optimal fit are important for the safety of the child.

Accessories such as additional belts must also meet legal requirements. These buckles or chest clips are designed to prevent children from slipping out of harness belts or being able to unfasten themselves. But even after installation, these systems have to ensure that the belt can be opened with a single operation. Not all models can do that, warns the ADAC.

Neck pillows, however, are permissible because they do not represent a change in the seat.
