Excursions in South Tyrol

Our most beautiful destinations in South Tyrol with children

Where to go for a trip with children in South Tyrol?
Mostly we go to South Tyrol for a hike with the kids. The particularly beautiful destinations in nature were often beautiful excursion destinations and hiking destinations for us at the same time.

I am thinking particularly of the Gilfenklamm near Sterzing. Or the less well-known Burkhard Gorge with the sandy beach (!) On Aglsboden. The Bletterbach Gorge near Bozen is no longer an insider tip – but it is still worth seeing: The Bletterbach Gorge is the most famous gorge in South Tyrol and is worth a trip with children.

In a mine in South Tyrol with children

Visit to the mine with children
During our numerous family vacations we also found that you don’t have to hike with children in South Tyrol. There are also special excursion destinations and sights for children in South Tyrol. The children particularly liked the huge old mine in Ridnaun on a family outing in South Tyrol, where you can see the smelting and even go up to the old mountain village on a guided tour. The mining time can be felt in the old tunnels. During a tour, even the deafening loud machines are switched on. It was a huge experience for the children!

Fortresses, castles and monasteries in South Tyrol
The first castles are located right after the Brenner. You have surely often passed the huge fortress behind Sterzing. The Franzensfeste can also be visited from the inside – very few families do that. We were inside and report about it. Here is the article about the Franzensfeste fortress. The number of castles in South Tyrol is so large that dozens of castles are spread all over the country, not all of which we can present here.

Many castles are not accessible either. The castles in the south of South Tyrol around Eppan were great. We will show you as a destination next to the Hocheppan castle, the ruin above Lake Kaltern. On our castle hike in Appiano, we passed three castles and looked at them.

Not a real castle, but the monastery in Klausen is similar to a castle. We are from the medieval alleys of Chiusa up to the monastery. That was our day in Chiusa with children. The Barbian waterfalls were also very impressive there.

Excursion to a castle in South Tyrol

What castles can you visit with children in South Tyrol??
We have two experiences on the subject of a castle in South Tyrol. We visited the castle above Klausen in Feldthurns. The building looked inconspicuous from the outside, and the rooms inside were very nice to look at. The visit to Rodenegg Castle in the Puster Valley, just a few kilometers from Brixen, was different. The facility is huge and looks almost majestic from the outside. Inside the plaster crumbles in many places. The story in Rodenegg about the Lauterfresser was entertaining – what is that? That was our trip in Rodenegg Castle.

Excursions in South Tyrol: beautiful lakes

One of the largest lakes is the Montiggler See near Bozen. We were at the Montiggler lake with children. He is wonderful hiking. You can also swim there and it is easily accessible compared to many mountain lakes. We went hiking and cycling there. You can also walk very well with the stroller. Excursions in South Tyrol – which are worthwhile in South Tyrol with children?

There is more to see in South Tyrol. We looked around and found the ideal excursion destinations with children for you on a family holiday in South Tyrol: a city tour in Brixen is also worthwhile. The episcopal city is impressive. Here you will find our tips for Bressanone with children. Sterzing is also small and beautiful at the foot of the Brenner Pass. You usually drive past it, and the small town with its towers and alleys is also worth a visit. This is how it looks in Sterzing with children.

Other excursion destinations in South Tyrol: from the bee museum to the high ropes course, from a visit to a castle to a maze. The activities in South Tyrol with children are diverse. Do you know what a Knottnkino is?

Overall, however, I have to say that the value of the excursion destinations in South Tyrol is lower than in Tyrol. We had far more “wow experiences” with the children in Tyrol than in South Tyrol. Make yourself a picture in advance. Some are even your way to South Tyrol and are worth a stop on arrival or departure:

Family hotel South Tyrol for your South Tyrol trip

Luxury family vacation in the Dolomites
We also visited the only grand hotel for families in South Tyrol, the Cavallino Bianco. It lies in the beautiful mountains in Val Gardena between the famous Dolomites – peaks of the Odle and the Sassolungo. Ideal for a hiking holiday with a lot of wellness: family hotel with pool, family hotel with water slide, plus lots of good food – and that as an all-inclusive family hotel!
