The date in English
date format
There are two date formats in English. One is used in the UK (and in the UK-influenced countries) and the other in the US.
Date format in the United Kingdom
The British date format is similar to German in the order of the day, month and year. However, the numbers are separated by a slash or hyphen.
Long version | Short version |
---|---|
August 18, 2010 | 18/08/2010 18/08/2010 |
The British date format is also used in the following countries: Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.
Date format in the United States (American English)
The most remarkable thing about the US format is that the month before the day is listed.
Long version | Short version |
---|---|
Wednesday, August 18, 2010
or |
8/18/2010 (Attention: month / day / year) 18/8/2010 (day / month / year) |
Date in spoken English
It should be noted that the individual days in the month are ordinal numbers. Let’s look at a few examples.
1 January 2000 reads the first of January two thousand .
January 1st 2000 reads January (the) first two thousand .
How to read the English year numbers?
In English, the year numbers can be read in two different ways:
- Pronunciation of the year as a number, that is, the year 2009 is read two thousand and nine.
- The year 1210 can be read by dividing the year into two parts. This second variant is used more frequently for the period between 1020-1999. You will probably come back to this variant after 2020.
