The Trollstigen – A road trip on Norway’s most beautiful roads

Of the Trollstigen in Norway fixed me since I first spotted him in a photo. So much so that only two weeks later I was supposed to leave for the land of fjords and fjords to drive over this very road! And while in Norway, why not start as many spectacular roads as possible in the given time? To soak up the landscape but also to simply enjoy the freedom of driving again.

And so, from my fixed idea – faster than ever dreamed – a handfester, durchgeplanter, one-week road trip on the Norwegian tourist routes! But I also drove on many other roads that do not have this official status, but are no less breathtaking!

Gradually I would like to introduce you to Norway’s tourist routes. Since the summer of 2012, a total of 18 streets have achieved this special status partly through massive structural changes. What distinguishes her? Extremely special driving experiences and very modern and stylish viewpoints!

It starts here in the blog of the Trollstigen, which is actually only part of the Tourist route Geiranger-Trollstigen is. I think this street is worth a separate contribution.

The Trollstigen – the most beautiful street in the world?

The Trollstigen is considered Norway’s most dramatic pass road! He will gladly also as The most dangerous The latter is a superlative, which used to be true once, but which I now think is a little dreamy. But what is quite certain: the so-called Troll ladder is probably the most photographed street in Norway. Not least because of the spectacular vantage point!

The Trollstigen consists of eleven hairpin turns, which snake up to a height of 852 meters above sea level and that at a slope of 9%. The serpentines are only passable a few months a year and lead past waterfalls, steep slopes and reveal – at least the passenger – a look into the incredible vastness of the Romsdal Valley and the up to 1760 meters high mountains! A small, very narrow natural stone bridge leads over the mighty waterfall Stigvossen.

In the past, Trollstigen must have been slightly different and more dangerous. But due to the high number of tourists not only the road was expanded over the years and thus defused, but also, the trappings’. The slopes were better secured against scree and avalanche, the narrow curves worked. The vantage point on top of the Trollstigen was completely designed and thus turned into a highlight itself. If many tourists would like to preserve the old Trollstigen.

But above all, he is now safe and replaces the old viewpoints, which were previously only to climb over dangerous trails. That makes it accessible to people who can not walk well. And the thrill of looking down is now there for everyone.

Where is the Trollstigen?

The Trollstigen is located in the middle of Romsdal, about 90 kilometers from Geiranger, the port for many cruise ships. On my road trip, after an overnight stay in Geiranger, I took the ferry from Eidsdal to Linge and therefore approached the Trollstigen coming from the south. The hairpin bends, I drove thus first downhill.

What an experience to drive the Trollstigen?

Well, my lack of sense of direction, it is due to the fact that when I arrived at Trollstigen I was completely surprised to drive him down! I had somehow automatically assumed that he would bring me up from the south. So I let the lookout point on the right and drove on. It was clear from the beginning that I would not just go up and down here. At the top it was still foggy, but at the first turn he pulled himself down and suddenly turned left from the abyss, I saw a huge waterfall in front of me plummet down the slopes! I concentrated on the road and tried to absorb as many impressions as possible.

But the view of the gigantic waterfall, the small bridge, the buses that push up the road, the fog and a few Zipfel street is simply indescribable! I’ve raced up and down a few times and tried hard to always take a moment when the alleged buses were already high up and left the air in front of me, if that was possible. Because I admit openly that the driving pleasure is muted, if the car in front of you pulls me 20 km / h up or down the mountain.

Which brings us to an important point:

What do you expect from a ride on the Trollstigen?

I think it is here to distinguish two types of cars or motorcyclists. Those who drive here purely for the fun of driving, and those who want to enjoy the view.

The majority of the tourists, I think, is about the view and the experience of going up or down here. After the 11 bends you drive straight on and it goes without saying that you enjoy the view while driving or drive the bends very slowly to take a picture. Especially since there are only two possibilities on the whole route to stop and get out. And you do not necessarily make new friends. Although the Trollstigen is closed for cars with trailer, but large campers and buses are allowed to drive here.

Rather, the minority of people traveling on this route are planning EXTRA for the Trollstigen a trip to Norway, or are so driving-crazy that they curve the route up and down tens of times. Most passengers would probably show a bird as well.

But I was such a guy! That’s why I was in Norway and yes, I could have spent the whole day there to find the perfect moment to quickly jump up or down in one go. To learn to take the optimal path through the bends. And I would have done it if I did not have to drive for a few more hours.

But my expectations of the Trollstigen were monstrously high and so I was almost a little disappointed when I was already down in the valley after my first few turns and a very slow ride thanks to front man.

Of course I had goose bumps at first sight anyway! That could not have been it. And so I drove up again immediately. I overtook cyclists, a tandem bicycle, a pedestrian in the Batman T-shirt and, yes, in the end, motorists taking pictures.

And with each trip, the track became bigger. But even if I could wait so long down, because nobody was behind me, almost always I had a car in front of me. As far as the lookout point is concerned, there is plenty of time. It’s worth it!

My tips for the Trollstigen:

What is logical, I have screwed up myself. Of course it is extremely crowded at noon here at Trollstigen. I arrived between 11 and 12 o’clock in the afternoon because I had to climb up to the Dalsnibba before and that was in the other direction. Therefore, my advice: be as early as possible on the Trollstigen! Or as late as possible. As it is very bright in the summer months anyway, you can easily at 22:30 in the bright drive. So you miss the coaches.

If I were to drive to Trollstigen again, I would actually move an overnight stay right here. Because only a few hundred meters from the world famous road away, there is a typical Norwegian campsite where I passed on my journey, the camping & Guest House. And as it is in Norway, you do not necessarily have to sleep in a tent, but can also rent a comfortable cabin. And is just a hop from the world famous street.

So there is plenty of time to take photos and film and also to make a detour to Trollveggen. This is the highest, with over 1000 meters, vertically overhanging rock face of Europe! Unfortunately I did not have time anymore.

If you ‘just’ pass through the Trollstigen, you have enough time for the Viewpoint! The visibility changes by the weather or the fog every minute and you can watch the cars below. There is a restaurant, lots of parking and an incredibly large souvenir shop. For a ride up or down, I needed in about 5-7 minutes.

My trip was supported by Visit Norway, Innovation Norway, Fjord Norway and Mercedes Benz!
