Tinkering an insect hotel with children is a great idea for a child’s birthday. You don’t need much material for our insect hotel and you can also use the brisk bee as a plant stick for tomatoes or other plants. The insect hotel also offers accommodation for various animals. Thanks to our special shape, the insect hotel is a real eye-catcher. You also use recycling materials. Another plus: the insect hotel lasts for several years.

The number of insects in Germany has declined by 76 percent since 1989. Bumblebees, bees and butterflies are affected by the decline. There is no decline in mosquitoes. However, these are increasing. There are many reasons for the decline in insects: sealing of land, use of pesticides in agriculture and loss of flowering meadows. It is important that everyone makes their contribution. Plants flowers where the bees and bumblebees find something to eat. A shelter is also important for the insects. For this reason, it is worth building an insect hotel. With our handicraft instructions you can also use the insect hotel as a planting stick. It is perfect for a child’s birthday and the children have a wonderful souvenir. You will also positively surprise the parents of the little guests. Instead of lugging a nasty bag of cheap and tooth-damaging sweets, the kids put on a really original eye-catcher. You need the following material for our handicrafts:

  • tin can
  • Pocket knife or multitool with a blade
  • yellow paint
  • black lacquer
  • brush
  • Wooden stick
  • straw
  • clear plastic bottle
  • Glue
  • Wackelaugen

As you can see from our list of materials, today’s handicrafts are inexpensive fun. That is also an argument for a child’s birthday.

In our handicrafts, we also show the children how upcycling works. We bring recyclables to a new use. Remove the lid from the tin with the can opener of the pocket knife. Empty the can and wash it out, leaving the bottom in the can and using wide brushes to paint the empty can in black and yellow stripes. Like a bee. You paint the floor yellow. Let the can dry.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to turn your thumbs now. Take the empty clear plastic bottle and cut out two wings of the same size with a pocket knife or multitool. Our bee can now take off.

Either you paint the bee on the now dry yellow floor of the can eyes and mouth. You can also buy loose eyes in the craft shop and stick them on. Use the brush to paint the bee’s nose and mouth. Sure our bee is laughing.

Our insect hotel now needs its interior. Take a handful of straw and put it in the empty can. Then earwigs are drawn into the straw. These insects eat pretty much everything that comes to their mouths, including aphids. The lacewing is also a tenant in our brisk bee. These insects are used in fruit and vegetable growing. The filigree lacewing feeds aphids as a favorite dish and is therefore a “useful” insect. If you have problems in the garden with aphids, now lacewings and earwigs take care of them.

The bee itself is almost finished. Drills a hole in the side of the tin with the pocket knife. It should be a little thinner than the stick on which you are going to put the insect hotel. Point the rod at one end like a pencil and ram it into the ground. You don’t need to buy a pressure-impregnated wooden stick. A straight branch from the forest is enough. You can put the stick from the insect hotel to a tendril like the tomato. This gives you a planting stick on which the tomato can grow and the aphid hunters are directly on site at the insect hotel.

Finally, put the insect hotel on the stick and our tinkering is done. A real eye-catcher in the garden that you can use for several years.

Here’s another suggestion to make an insect hotel with the kids. You need:

  • an empty flower pot
  • chicken wire
  • a piece of rope
  • line
  • Multitool or pliers
  • Filling material (tree cones, straw, reed tubes, etc. …)
  • Crayon

Tinker insect hotel with children: you are ready in less than ten minutes

At the beginning, the children decorate the flowerpot with crayons. The more colorful, the better. First you knot the rope. The knot should be so thick that it does not fit through the hole in the bottom of the flowerpot. Run the rope through this hole. Now put the filling material in the flowerpot. Place the hare wire on the opening of the flowerpot and cut it with the pliers so that it is about ten centimeters above. Attaches the hare wire to the flowerpot with the cord. Our hotel for insects is ready. You only need to hang it on a branch. If you don’t have a garden, you can make the insects in the city park happy. Have fun crafting!
