Everything about toothache

There are different types of toothache?

He often comes suddenly: a bite on ice and pain suddenly runs through the cheek. Sometimes he creeps up slowly, falls silent, only to flare up more dramatically soon afterwards. Pain is not the same as pain. But in general, nerves are irritated. The tissue of the tooth nerve is normally safely protected from tooth enamel and gums in the interior of the teeth. However, if it is attacked by bacteria, injuries or chemicals, the fibers react extremely sensitively.

We dentists distinguish between two types of toothache: idiopathic and sympathetic toothache. The idiopathic has its center directly in the tooth, the sympathetic only radiates on the tooth nerve tissue and the origin lies somewhere else.

In addition, it is important for us that you describe your toothache as precisely as possible so that we can find the causes quickly. Do you only feel it when you feel cold or when you eat hot food? Does the pain pull or knock? Or was he getting stronger and suddenly stopped? This is also an alarm signal.

What causes my toothache??

If the tooth nerve reacts painfully to cold or heat, this is usually an indication of caries bacteria gnawing at the enamel. If it pulls heavily after a cold stimulus such as a cold breeze, the nerve tissue has probably become inflamed. If the pain is throbbing, mostly in the evening, a tooth nerve may die, so that root canal treatment is necessary, and possibly antibiotics. For example.

Once you have described your toothache, we will examine your teeth and use a cold spray, for example, to identify the exact crime scene of bacteria in your tooth. However, there are far more possible causes of toothache and sensitive teeth than tooth decay: exposed tooth necks. Periodontitis, an inflammation of the tooth structure and the tooth bed. Erupting wisdom teeth. Bone inflammation. Gnashing of teeth. The breakage of a prosthesis. Pain can still be felt after pulling a tooth. A so-called "barotrauma" is conceivable if you react painfully to pressure differences. Then you will feel, for example, when flying that voids have arisen because fillings or crowns were leaking. This is just an extract from the large register of painful dental diseases that dentists know.

In addition, acute toothache can be triggered by other diseases such as inflammation of the sinuses. Ear pain sometimes radiates to the teeth. Headaches are sometimes accompanied by toothache, such as with migraines. Cysts in the jaw area are conceivable. Inflamed facial nerves cause excruciating pain attacks. If all teeth are in order, your family doctor is the best contact.

In very rare cases, toothache indicates a heart attack. Then they are not the only symptom. Pain behind the breastbone, which radiates to the left shoulder, is added, and severe shortness of breath: This is an emergency, in which please call the emergency doctor immediately!

My child has a toothache – how seriously should I take it and what can I do??

Caries is often the cause of toothache in children too. Even milk teeth can be affected, their enamel is thinner than that of permanent teeth and is therefore particularly susceptible. Caries bacteria also feed on milk sugar and sugar in other sweet drinks that children like to drink. That is why dental care is so important from the start!

You should act quickly if your child has lost a tooth, for example after a fall or impact from a swing or seesaw in the playground. For such cases, schools have tooth rescue boxes in which the tooth can be safely stored. If the root canal is intact, the dentist can replace it. The chances of a complete cure are very good. If no rescue box is available, you can also put the tooth in milk – this is definitely better than in water or even in a handkerchief. In any case, as soon as possible to the dentist with child and tooth!

Toothache in children is quite normal when the first teeth break through. Then biting on a rubber ring or spoon will bring relief. A common, extra-long toothbrush party for the whole family can comfort the pain and help the teeth grow. Explain lovingly to your child what is happening in his mouth and together feel the buds under which the new tooth is waiting impatiently to shine in the mouth soon.

In older children, misaligned teeth or lack of space when permanent teeth break through could cause toothache. Therefore, it is particularly important during these times to have all check-ups at your pediatrician and dentist.

Toothache can be dangerous?

Is it true that toothache can come from stress?

Anyone who is literally annoyed by stress can feel the irritation everywhere, including on the tooth nerves. Especially when you literally grit your teeth to master all the tasks. If there are no causes on the teeth, relaxation methods are available to relieve the soul. Because stressful situations can also lead to gnashing of teeth at night, which can actually damage the teeth severely.

Which pain relievers are recommended for toothache?

Medicines like ibuprofen and paracetamol work well for toothache. Only do without aspirin, because the active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) inhibits blood clotting; this can be problematic in dental treatment.

If the pharmacies are closed and the pain is not too strong, some home remedies are recommended: For mild to moderate toothache, a cold compress or ice wrapped in a tea towel will help, which are pressed against the cheek over the painful area. Heat, on the other hand, usually increases the pain.

Cloves are the second classic that the ancient Romans appreciated. Bite gently but as close as possible to the painful tooth so that the active ingredient eugenol can numb the area. Or brush with clove oil.

With their ingredients, chamomile, mint and sage inhibit the multiplication of bacteria and thus the spread of inflammation. Mix the leaves and flowers, pour hot water over them and let the tea steep for ten to fifteen minutes. Then fill your mouth and rinse for a minute or two. If it’s the weekend again and you don’t have the herbs at home, you can also disinfect your mouth with salt water. Do not drink tea like saline, but rinse with your mouth closed for a maximum of two minutes and then spit it out!

When should I go to the dentist with a toothache??

Sometimes the toothache is gone after a particularly thorough oral care because pressing food residues have been removed from the interdental spaces or a fluoride-containing toothpaste has caused tooth decay and new dentin could form unhindered. However, you should not wait any longer for the following toothache:

– The toothache remains despite thorough dental care.
– You have pain when chewing.
– The toothache comes suddenly and / or gets worse.
– The gums bleed frequently.
– You feel swelling in your mouth or face.
– You have a toothache and fever.

In these cases, make an appointment with us as soon as possible!
