Transfers on their journey in Thailand with children

Transfers in Thailand

Traveling in Thailand is an experience and traveling is relatively pleasant. The infrastructure is well developed and you can choose from several typical Thai transfer options. Traveling by public transport is well organized, with buses and trains running according to a fixed timetable. On top of that, it’s a great way to see the varied landscape. In Thailand you have many different ways to get from A to B. Try for example a Songtaew, a night train and a longtail boat.

During your trip through Thailand we organize the long transfers between the cities or your building blocks by plane, minivan, bus or (night) train. The other small transfers can be easily arranged on-site. If you wish, we can also book them for you.

By bus back to Bangkok.

Thailand by bus

Thailand has a modern and well organized bus network. All big cities are connected. These buses stop in many places and you sit between Thais. You are curious and try to get in touch with you. Sometimes they are a little embarrassed and smile at you carefully. You’ll see monks sit down in the back of the bus, never next to a woman – it’s very much appreciated if you leave these places empty. Note, however, that the buses are often full and there is little room for large luggage. The local buses have a fan, and the windows and doors are often open to provide fresh air.

Our conclusion: Traveling in Thailand with children on public buses is limited feasible.

Traveling with the family on the night train – traveling comfortably.

Thailand with the (night) train

Night trains in Thailand are good transfer options for longer distances. They just come in contact with other travelers and also meet the Thai middle class. On top of that, you save a hotel night and arrive early at your new destination. The trains are reasonably clean and well maintained, but do not expect too much comfort. We book the tickets in advance for your family and reserve seats. The train crew will show you your seats. Most of the time you are sitting opposite each other. The night train in Thailand has different classes: 1st 2nd and 3rd class.

We book the 2nd class if you are traveling in Thailand with your children. The beds are just as comfortable as in the 1st class and there is enough space for your luggage.
The air conditioning is controlled automatically and it is therefore often cold on the train. A warm sweater or a fleece jacket is recommended while driving. You can store your luggage next to your place in the luggage bag.

If you want a private compartment, you can book the 1st class. It is a secluded, smaller room with a bunk bed for two people. Due to the small room it is a bit colder here.

In the night train, it is easy to sleep.

There is a “restaurant” on the train where you can eat fried noodles or soup. There are also chilled drinks. You can also eat in your own compartment, in the early evening someone comes by to take the order. You can then directly specify your wishes for breakfast, but do not expect too much of it: a cup of warm water, a teaspoon and a few noodles. In our opinion the food on board was very simple and not too fresh. We recommend buying snacks and water at the station before getting on the train.
In the evening the train steward comes by and conjures out of your chairs in nullkommanix a bed with clean sheets, a pillow and a blanket. On the two sides of the passage, a series of stacked beds is created. Curtains are hung so you have some privacy during the night train ride with your kids.

For the festivities Loi Krathong (November) and Songkran (April) the night trains are sold out quickly, as many Thais go to their families.

On the spot – by taxi, tuk-tuk, Songtaew, moped and bicycle

Tranport in Thailand using tuk-tuk.

Tuk-Tuk

Tuk-tuks are a very popular means of transport and a ride with them is a real experience! You actually see these motorized rickshaws everywhere. The rattle of the engine, the heat and the traffic – in our opinion, a tuk-tuk ride is all about traveling with your children in Thailand.

Pronounce the price with the driver before you get in, which prevents misunderstandings. For a ride of 10 minutes you pay about 50 baht – just over one euro. All around the Khao San Road, the tourist road in Bangkok, we could go “anywhere we wanted” for 10 baht. But then, for example, we had to stop at a silver bazaar, the driver hoped that we would buy something here. If you do not want that, just pick another tuk-tuk that will take you straight to your destination.

By taxi, you can travel well in Bangkok.

Taxis in Thailand are cheap and the chauffeurs are friendly and helpful. Especially in the big cities taxi ride is the most convenient way, you will not have any trouble with exhaust fumes. We recommend that you use taxis that are often painted in bold colors with “taxa meters”. You then pay the price of the meter. The start tariff is usually around 35 baht and there are about 2 baht per kilometer added. It is not customary to tip the taxi driver, but he will be happy and grateful if you round up the amount. Some drivers claim that their meters are broken and would rather agree on a price, but this is often less favorable. Most taxi drivers speak only “hands-and-feet” English, so it’s convenient to bring a business card or a city map to show where you want to go.

With the Songtaew to the next highlight.

songtaew

A Songtaew is a covered pickup truck with built-in benches. It is a practical and cheap way to travel with children in Thailand. The Songtaew drives fixed routes, you can get off at any time. If you reach out your hand (palm down) the driver will stop and you can agree on a price. On the islands, the Songtaews often pass the various beaches, handy if you want to look around the other side of the island.

Explore Bangkok by bike.

Bicycle and moped rental

In addition to Bangkok, where we offer a very exciting bike ride, it is especially in small places great to go even by bike or moped. You can set your own pace and hold in the places that you find interesting. Bicycles can be rented at some places at your hotel and they cost about 2 euros per day. Be sure to bring a bottle of water and a head cover against the heat. You can also rent scooters in the larger towns or on the islands. You can then visit the sights that are outside the center. For renting a moped, we recommend taking an international driver‘s license. For borrowing your passport is often withheld or you have to deposit a small deposit.

Transfer over water

On the way by longtail boat!

Ferries

Many large islands in the south of Thailand are easy to reach by ferry. The ferries between the main island run several times a day. You can easily arrange the tickets for the ferry on-site; if you want, we can also book the tickets for you in advance.

Longtailboot

The longtail boat is a typical Thai, wooden boat. It is narrow, long and often painted in different colors. At the bow of the boat are tied various linen cloths and sometimes floral wreaths. This is what the skippers do to protect themselves from their gods while they are driving. It is about the 16 people in a long tail, but that also depends on the length of the boat.
