Treatment of sensitive teeth

Every eighth adult has sensitive teeth. This can be very painful when it comes to drinking or eating cold or hot food. If the thought of biting on a popsicle pulls you together, it’s time to change your habits, change your diet, and let your dentist know about possible treatments.

Use a toothbrush with soft bristles.

It may appear that a medium or hard brush will make your teeth cleaner, but with such an abrasive brush the tooth enamel can wear out. When the enamel is worn, the teeth feel sensitive because the dentin has been exposed. The dentin contains nerves in small dentine tubules, which are immediately stimulated by external factors such as hot and cold liquids. Switch to a toothbrush with soft bristles that cleans your teeth just as well without causing further sensitivity problems or injuring your gums. Apply gentle pressure and remember that performance is nothing compared to good technique.

Avoid toothbrushes with hard plastic bristles – these are not necessary to clean your teeth.

Brush with a gentle circular motion.

The way you brush your teeth is as important as the toothbrush you use. If you tend to push hard and use a saw motion back and forth, you’re likely to rub off the enamel and cause gum recession by exposing the tooth root. This has a double negative effect as it affects the appearance of your teeth and increases sensitivity. Instead, use a gentle circular motion to brush your teeth. Always brush with vertical lines that should start from the gum line that covers the entire tooth surface. Run the brush over the gums over your teeth. This will prevent gum recession and stimulate blood flow to your gums to provide better protection against bacteria. Take your time and spend about three minutes restoring all of your teeth in one brushing session.

If you have difficulty brushing your teeth, applying the right pressure, and using a circular motion, getting an electric toothbrush can help. The bristles rotate in a circle and all you have to do is hold the head of the brush next to the tooth. Your teeth will be perfectly clean with little effort.

Use fluoride toothpaste.

Fluoride strengthens the enamel and leads to reduced sensitivity and pain. Start with a fluoride toothpaste so that your teeth are covered with fluoride every day. In addition, you can use a fluoride mouthwash.

Your dentist may recommend fluoride treatment with a concentrated amount of fluoride, which is applied directly to the areas where the enamel has worn out. However, this should only be applied locally and care should be taken to ensure that the fluoride is not absorbed.
Note that some organizations do not recommend the use of fluoride as they have negative effects on human health and the environment. Do your own research and talk to your dentist about the right choice for you.

Use desensitizing toothpaste.

Desensitizing toothpaste is formulated to coat the teeth and shield them from the substances that make them feel sensitive and painful. They basically seal any porous enamel or exposed dentine tubules. After several weeks of use, you should notice a decrease in sensitivity. If this doesn’t work, you should ask your dentist about other sensitivity treatments.

Make sure you use brushes and floss every day.

The sensitivity can also be the result of gingivitis caused by the build-up of dental plaque and tartar. Inflammation of the gums causes the gums to bleed, swell, change color and sometimes cover different parts of your teeth and become sensitive. Gum inflammation can be avoided by practicing good dental hygiene, e.g. B. Brush your teeth twice a day with a suitable technique and floss once a day.

Also pay attention to regular tooth cleaning, since plaque that accumulates with dental floss and brushes cannot be removed.

Eat less sugar and starch.

The bacteria that form cavities feed on carbohydrates – sugar and starch. If your diet is very high in sugar and starch, reducing the body cavity can help you reduce your cavities and significantly improve your sensitivity.

Bread, pasta, snacks and beans are starchy foods that can cause tooth decay.
Ice cream, candy, baked goods and other sugary foods should also be avoided.
If you eat sugar and starch, be sure to drink water and then brush your teeth so the substances don’t stay on your teeth. Also, do not rinse your mouth immediately if you are using fluoride toothpaste. Leave it on for two minutes before rinsing it off.

Limit acidic foods and drinks.

Acidic foods can help keep the tooth enamel on your teeth. If you avoid acidic food and drinks, your email will remain intact. Consider limiting or eliminating the following:

citrus fruits
Carbonated drinks

Use a straw.

If you drink highly acidic liquids such as tomato juice, orange juice or tea, use a straw so that the drink collects in the back of your mouth instead of sweating around your teeth. This way you can enjoy your favorite beverages without worrying that they will wear out your emails.

Drink more milk and water.

After indulging in acidic food or drink, rinse your mouth with water and drink some milk. The water rinses off the acid and milk, which is fundamental and changes the chemistry in your mouth to prevent the melt from eroding.

You can also dissolve an alkaline solution from a spoonful of baking soda in a glass of water for a minute.

Consider applying a sealant.

The most common way to treat teeth with enamel spots is to apply a sealant that covers the tooth and serves the same purpose as the enamel. After applying the sealant, the sensitivity and pain disappear and the occlusal surface of the molars is easier to clean, which means that bacteria are removed more quickly. Talk to your dentist about whether this treatment option is a good choice for you.

Ask your dentist if you are grinding your teeth.

Many people crunch in their sleep without knowing it. If you grind your teeth, you can gradually remove the enamel. A dentist can determine if you are grinding at night by examining your teeth with an enlarging tool. If you grind your teeth, your dentist will likely recommend wearing a face mask at night to avoid further damage.

See if you need a root canal.

If your teeth are extremely sensitive due to a deep cavity, you may need a root canal to fix the problem. A root canal corrects problems with the soft core of the tooth that can become very sensitive. Your dentist will check if a root canal is needed.
