Tv legend putz takes a close look at e-cars and takes a clear swipe at the greens

Science journalist and presenter Jean Putz in his garden

In an interview, TV presenter jean putz was critical of the electric car and the Greens, accusing them of populism.

Cologne- as host of "hobbythek for decades, he brought topics from the field of science into the living rooms of the federal republic and made a name for himself throughout germany. jean putz turned 85 on tuesday, and despite his age, he has lost none of his brightness. Shortly before his birthday, the science journalist gave a speech to the world an interview and expressed his displeasure about the electric car and the politics of the greens.

TV legend jean putz on the end of the burner – "bumbling and populist"

"we are experiencing an unspeakable focus on electromobility," notes the 85-year-old with an eye on the current federal election campaign. A development that putz is "not at all" pleased about. The science journalist has quickly found an enemy: the abandonment of the combustion engine. "the internal combustion engines of private cars, on the other hand, only contribute a maximum of six percent to CO2 emissions. Calling for the end of internal combustion engines is bumbling and populist. It leads to a dead end," is his verdict.

Jean putz also lashes out at the greens – "wishful thinking alone is not enough"

putz sees the central problem of the electric car as the electricity consumption needed to ensure a nationwide charging infrastructure in germany. "today, we import around 80 percent of our primary energy. A germany independent of energy imports is an illusion. If only half of today’s electric cars were hooked up to the power grid at the same time, it would collapse," says the 85-year-old.

putz also took the opportunity to lash out at the green party, which he apparently sees as the cause of this "bungling" policy: "my impression is that annalena baerbock doesn’t know the difference between primary energy and electrical energy. Wishful thinking alone is not enough," the science journalist criticizes the green party’s candidate for chancellorship.

Electromobility: moderator putz advocates synthetic fuels

Nevertheless, putz predicts that the electric motor will play an important role in the future of the mobility revolution. "nothing speaks against equipping cars with electric motors. They have a very high degree of efficiency. But the electricity for these engines should be generated on board with combustion engines from synthetic fuels," explains the 85-year-old. This form of propulsion would be CO2-neutral and cheaper, argues putz.

in the current election campaign for the 2021 federal election, a major focus is on the mobility revolution and the promotion of electric cars. The Greens, for example, want to ban the registration of internal combustion engines in Germany from 2030 onwards. On Tuesday, the german environmental aid organization (deutsche umwelthilfe) also filed a lawsuit against carmakers BMW and mercedes because of the combustion phase-out. (fd)
