Underweight is dependent on gender?

The gender-independent determination of the weight categories according to BMI values ​​ignores the natural differences between men and women:

  1. Women have a higher percentage of body fat than men.
  2. Women have a lower water content than men
  3. Men have a larger proportion of muscle mass than total body weight.
  4. Men usually have a heavier bone structure than women in relation to the total weight.
  5. Men of the same height are usually heavier than women.
  6. In children, the normal body fat percentage changes almost permanently with growth, depending on age and gender. Different BMI tables therefore apply to children.

For these reasons, women with a smaller BMI are classified as underweight and overweight than men.

Underweight in children

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2013 around 17% of children under the age of 5 (98 million) in developing countries were underweight. In South Asia, the proportion was sometimes as high as 30%.

What to do if you are underweight?

In cases of severe underweight, you should definitely have one doctor attention. If your much too thin daughter or heavily underweight son only appears apathetic, speaks in a low voice and starts to cry in the smallest of arguments, you should immediately consult a doctor to rule out the life-threatening consequences of being underweight (anorexia).

Otherwise, it is helpful to solve psychological blockages and to find a natural eating behavior based on healthy whole foods that are rich in minerals, proteins and vitamins.

Beware of stuffing mountains of chocolate, fast food or low-quality fats in yourself or the children. Food intake should be spread over 6 or more meals. The calorie intake should be at least 20% above the daily calorie requirement. Delicious herbs and spices, varied food and bright natural colors stimulate your appetite.
