Information about American shoe sizes, i.e. the US sizes

The US shoe size system, like the British, is based on the inch unit. In North America, too, each shoe size corresponds to a third of an inch, i.e. 0.847 cm. Shoe size 0 starts, unlike in Great Britain at 9.95 cm. The is called, the first 3 and 11 twelfth inches are not used for size numbering in the US size system. From a foot length of this 9.95 cm, 13 children’s shoe sizes of 0.847 cm each are defined, after which the sizes start again for women with size 0 and for men with size 1. In practice, the US system is largely coordinated with the UK system. However, with the exception that with the same foot length, US men’s sizes are around one size and US women’s sizes are around two sizes larger than the corresponding UK shoe sizes. The reference size for the US sizes is usually, as also according to the ISO standard used here, the foot length, but sometimes also the inside length or the length of the last of the shoe. This is one of the reasons why shoe sizes are so different.

Calculation of the US shoe sizes according to ISO / TS 19407: 2015

The US shoe size calculator determines the sizes according to ISO. The US shoe size tables presented here were also created in accordance with this ISO specification. The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) has defined the international conversion of shoe size systems and thus published an international pre-standard. Nevertheless, there are very often deviations from the American shoe sizes theoretically calculated here. Shoes are therefore manufacturer-dependent or simply because of different standards, often smaller or larger than assumed based on the size.

The formula for the US men’s size makes it clear that each size corresponds to 0.847 cm. Two sizes, i.e. 2 × 0.847 cm, are opened for toe clearance. Finally, 24 sizes are subtracted from the formula. These are the "to empty", a little less than 12 sizes at the beginning and the subsequent 13 child sizes. However, exactly 24 US sizes are deducted because the US system, as described above, is coordinated with the UK system, with the exception that one size more is allocated for the same foot length.

The formula for the US women’s size again shows that each size corresponds to 0.847 cm. To ensure freedom of the toes, two sizes, i.e. 2 × 0.847 cm, are opened. At the end of the formula, unlike men, 23 sizes are subtracted instead of 24. This is because the numbering of the US sizes for women starts with zero after the 13 child sizes, while for men it starts with one. However, exactly 23 US sizes are deducted because the US system, as described above, is coordinated with the UK system, with the exception that US women’s sizes are around two sizes larger than the corresponding UK shoe sizes with the same foot length.

Compared to the adult formula, an extra eight percent of the foot length is added to the toe clearance instead of the two English sizes. Here, however, compared to the UK child size only 11.5 instead of 12 "empty" Sizes subtracted at the beginning so that the US child sizes are always 0.5 sizes larger than the UK child sizes. Finally, 0.4 sizes are added to the ISO formula in order to obtain practical size tables.

US shoe size chart to US sizes for kids

In the United States and the United Kingdom, different numbers are assigned to children’s shoe sizes than to adult shoe sizes. After a total of 13 US children’s shoe sizes, the US shoe sizes for adults follow, starting with shoe size 0 for women and starting with size 1 for men. Example of calculating the US shoe size

Ms. Shoemaker wants to buy new shoes and has a pair of US size 8 shoes in her hand. You now want to know which EU shoe size, i.e. which German shoe size corresponds to US size 8.

1. Calculate foot length based on US size

First, the foot length is calculated using the US shoe size 8. The foot length then serves as the basis for calculating the German size. For this purpose, the ISO formula for determining the US shoe size is changed accordingly using the foot length.

Explanations

A US size corresponds to a third of an inch, i.e. 0.847 cm
The first 11 or so US sizes are not numbered

Therefore a total of 23 sizes are subtracted

2. Calculate the EU size based on the determined foot length

To determine Ms. Schuhmacher’s EU size, the appropriate ISO conversion formula is first used based on her foot length. The result of this calculation is then rounded to the nearest whole or half size.
